Roy, I buy mine from a local contractor. Check the yellow pages.....ALSO line the thing before using it. I didn't but my mother didn't have real smart kids.

Kaowool and any of the high temp liners are expensive. You might consider using firebrick. I have forges built of both and in a lot of ways the firebrick is much better. It's just not as snazzy as a Kaowool lined propane tank. It sure is a lot cheaper.

What kind of burner are you building?

Roy, Centaur Forge sells a light weight fire-brick for their forges. I have their knifemakers forge. It has a castable refractory rounded bottom and the light weight bricks on the sides. They cut easily with a hack saw. They can withstand who knows what high temps. Ive had mine to 2400F they still look new after 3 years. They melt with flux so a castable floor is a good idea.

Wayne Goddard has a pretty cool article in the most recent issue of Blade with his one brick forge, and his 1.5 brick forge. Some diagram material there, tho not sure if complete.

Tell me more about the forge, what size?

I use kitty litter in the bottom of my forge to soak up borax and to protect the kawool.

I just made up a shelf of ground kitty litter, unground kitty litter, sawdust and milk of magnesia. It isn't very durable but it works, I will mix in some wood ash for the next experiment, boowahahahahaha
