I was wondering about forging some of the smaller styles of Gransfors-type hatchets. Does anybody know what kind of steel they use? Do they forge-weld high carbon into a mild steel? Also.... what kind of drift is used? I'm assuming that 'wrapped eye' would be the logical method here???

i think they start with a solid piece and punch an eye. and i do believe they weld a high carbon bit in. at least ive seen a video of them doing it. i dont know of anywhere that carries that shape of drift so you may have to make your own although you may be able to find one somewhere. if so let us know. but i could be wrong on all counts

savageknives is right,If Im not mistaken they do start with a solid piece and punch the eye. Then they split the blade and forge weld a high carbon bit. Theres a lot of welding doing it the old wrap and fold way.

Gransfor uses about the same steel as Busse does in their knives, I have lost the number off the top of my head, in Sweden I think it is L7? here it is S7, any how it is about like what they make jackhammer bits out of, very tough, all one piece.

Here is a video that someone put on Utoob they say a Gransfors Bruks making axes, about 25 seconds you will see them put in the drift.

I guess that wasnt there video I saw then. My mistake. One piece of s7, thats plenty expensive :D

Gransfor uses about the same steel as Busse does in their knives,

Can you provide a link to this information? I would be interested in seeing the composition of the 2 metals if you have a link that shows them.
Thanks,
JD
