Walosi, woodchucks,

Tried coating my canemasters cane with the "dunk method" after having used behr tung oil for the previous 12 coats on the same cane. Shine is wonderful, but, the darn thing hasn't dried to a hard finish yet after just one thin coat. It has been 36 hours to date and there is still some tackiness. Been running the air during the day, and cut it off for about 12 hours at night, so have no idea about humidity in the workshop.

What else could it be, or what am I doing wrong, or is this normal. Let me know. Anxious to steel it down with #0000 and start second coat of formsbys. thanks for replies ahead of time.

Formby's Tung Oil finish has a Tip: on the container:

"High humidity or too thick an application may increase
dry time. If the product has not dried overnight,
apply artificial light directly over the wood surface."

"Apply artificial light", as in hold it close to a light bulb. It works, but on a rounded surface like a cane (especially with carving) it is next to impossible to get an even drying effect. I get as yancy as anybody waiting for the stuff to dry, which is why I ranted about "patience" over and over in other posts. I've had gunstocks hanging in a drying room for 5-6 days. Go irritate your neighbor, shop for new canes, whatever. It will dry, but in its' own time. AC right now doesn't help as much as usual (our humidity is sitting about 85% and the condensate pump is running straight through). Can't be any dryer down there, and the only substitute for dryer air is time.

sounds like a bad case of build-up to me.

Did you rough up the finish before applying the new one?

Did light sanding with 600 grit paper before applying finger dunks. Did follow the instruction about "artificial light" prior to posting question here. Guess only time will solve the challenge of impatience....LOL. Thanks Wal, and others.

This is my user, so, I keep it pretty clean and buffed. No build up prior to coating, and only thin amount applied, but clear difference between this and the behr, though I love the behr finish as well. Just much more matte than the current tung oil.

one more question - why did it need a 12th coat?
