Forum rule that I wasn't aware of.

As you see
that one completely got past me

i saw it when it first began
then it fell right off my radar scan

good reading ....
and seems a good reason that it is there..
thanks for bringing it to our attention ...

I'm new here and I certainly don't want to offend anyone, but I don't think that the reason given is very good. Even though basic or registered users can't sell on forum, they can still trade. Before I went to trade anything I would want to know what it was worth.

Good reason or bad, it is what it is and it was put there by the owner of the forum.

It was put in place because so many people were asking for values in a way that made it clear they were going to sell, and got offers right then and there.

Now unpaid members can't fish for offers iike that. Blame them for messing up your chances.

Josh,
9 times out of 10 most will tell you a little about your knife then send you to an auction site to see what they have closed auction at. Most know plenty about a knife but little about the current value, unless they spen alot of time on the auction sites...

Buying a knife by mail from a complete stranger who posts once on the Buck Forum sounds like a good way to lose some money.

I guess a lot of people go to casinos and gamble, though......maybe it's fun for them.

:D

So, for all these guys who have been coming on here and asking "Whats my knife worth" its not allowed and its not allowed for others to answer. I think this needs to a reminder each week here for a while until the word gets around. But asking for history, mfg. year, steel, ect.. This is all OK. DM

i for one used to suspect many ask as they dont know if they want to sell or not
for instance i recall one guy had dads knife .. he needed money but would not sell it if it was not worth a lot
he decided to keep it
but yes the mods are correct many many times they are jest fishing for data to fig out what to ask for it
some times i have given a range i saw on ebay
but i guess that is not allowed either...
and yes 334 dave did make offers .. so ya can bet 110 dave wont do so now! ;)

All you have to do is watch auction sites. It seems when we have a hot knife talk about something we are looking for or interested in as a group, they all of a sudden show up at premium prices. I actually didnt think it was allowed to ask value regardless of membership rating and that all the questions we get were just being overlooked. From a forum standpoint, if you allow folks to fish for pricing info so they can sell somewhere else, and say 1000 guys a year do it, even with only 1 or 2 posts each it still wastes a lot of space. I never know what anything is worth anyway :o

It happens here so frequently it never occured to me that it was against the rules until I ran across the thead that I linked to in the original post. Many times new members come here, show their knives, ask the value question and get offers right then and there from others on the forum. I'd never seen the rule enforced before.

They should probably re-think the policy.

Some of the most interesting discussions on the forums have come from a guy posting about some knife his dad left him or that he found at a garage sale and bought. It's only reasonable that people would want to know what they're worth.

Sometimes they may want to sell them......and often they don't.

But these folks often add a lot to the forums by showing knives that are old or unusual.

We should welcome that.

As I understand it (which may well be incorrect), the "rule" only applies to registered and basic members; all others may inquire away!!

I think you're correct.

That's exactly the group from which these most interesting questions and discussions would come.

And, of course, that's exactly the group that is NOT going to know the rules.

Wouldn't hurt for the forum owner to reconsider the overall impact and maybe make some adjustments as I suggested above.

It dosn't happen often but there are some shady sellers that use the forum like a stocked fishing pond.
