I've been using AVG for years and now I get this message that AVG 8.0 won't be free, and like many I don't want to pay for an antivirus.

What other free software do you guys use?

i downloaded avg 8.0 the other day and it is still free, i hope. you might try avast anti virus and i believe that comodo also has one.

AVG is still free. Just go to the site and look for the free version to download.

AVG has made it progressively harder to find the free version, but have faith, it's still there.

Buy a Mac & you wont have to worry about virus protection ever again.

Mac's are just a susceptible. Stop kidding yourself.

And seriously....do you think he's gonna' dump his PC and spend a ton of money on a Mac just because you claim they don't get viruses? The guy wants some help fixing what he has and has already spent money on. Geez.

I have been using antivir , It I think its great. Probably the best free anti virous yet imo.

All good choices so far, and here another vote for Avira Antivir. I used AVG for years, but it constantly caused me problems with some bugginess of the download and program process. I've used Avast, but it's so dreadfully slow that I couldn't stand it. It's still a good program, just too slow for me.

Antivir is my new toy, and seems to be working nicely. It'll give you a popup everytime it downloads an update, which is annoying, but it's still a good program.

All of these programs are available on download.com (cnet).

go with avast. it has a boot sector scan that works well for getting rid of bugs. i used to use avg until it let a really bad virus get by.

Another vote for avast. I had no problems whatsoever; I just renewed my annual subscibtion last week.

I'm a happy Linux user.

But my daughter keeps logging into Windows occasionally so I keep and run antivirus, antispam and firewall, all are free software

I installed AVG 8.0 free last week and it's running fine.

That article is two years old. How many Mac viruses have you heard of since then? Apple, unlike Microsoft, is taking an active approach to combating viruses.

Just because he owns a PC now doesn't mean that he won't want to change to a Mac later. I did.

Avast floats my boat, but since AVG is still free, go with it, since you seem to like it.

a way less expensive solution, if you're ready to let go of all the good stuff you have only on Windows, is Linux (and if you don't want to uninstall windows, you can still have the two OS on the same PC quite easily).
Easy to use, stable (if you don't get a weird distribution. if you hesitate, Ubuntu and Fedora are great for beginners. Mandriva seems to be good too), lots of support, and lots of other qualities. You'll keep your ugly* PC, but you'll save lots of bucks.
BTW, with free firewall and free antivirus, my Windows XP is free from viruses, I still have to get attacked by one since several years.

*depends on your tastes. I personally find the macs ugly. look like futuristic refrigerators from the 70's to me.

I was aware of the hidden free AVG. However using a notebook and travelling it was better to use the subscription version. Not a serious cost and I need the increased protection with my office colleagues sending me crap (swearing does not seem to stop the guys using the allstaff,,,, mail).

AVG free is excellent for home users who don't go out of their way to expose themselves through channeling chainmail or visiting porn/daft bloggs etc.

if you want a more secure surfing experience, you can also use mozilla Firefox with the add-on called "noscript".
it will be a bit of a hassle sometimes because it will need you to explicitly permit the flash/java based websites you know are secure (though it takes 2 clicks most of the time). A good news is that it will also stop flash-based ads, you know, the stuff that comes over your page and has a hidden "close" button.

I really like noscript and feel like it really enhances my web surfing. It secures stuff when I use Firefox on Windows too.

I do that with IE. I have javascript turned off for the internet zone. If a website has a legitimate use for javascript and I want to allow it I have to put that website in my safe zone, which is more trouble than it should be (it's several mouse clicks and a copy and paste) but that stops all popups before they even start, so they don't waste my bandwidth, and prevents all kinds of nasty things from happening.

For a long time I didn't allow cookies in the internet zone either, but currently I'm allowing cookies and using Spybot to clear out the tracking cookies.

I wasn't aware that it was possible on IE too. I'll give that a try for when I use IE (which means: when I'm opening my Hotmail mailbox with Live Messenger)
