I've often heard of knifemakers more than willing to share techniques and info with others. There's a maker who has patented cast steel blades and calls his product dendritic steel. This seems to fly in the face of the spirit of custom makers. What are your thoughts on this?

Although Boye has patented his methods, you can buy dendritic steel from him, in both ground blades and bar form. I believe that the patent follows in the footsteps of other knife-related patents, trying to protect an investment, not exclude others.

I'm pretty sure he also wrote a book about knifemaking that's in my local library. Anytime I want I can check it out and learn about knifemaking for free. Donated no doubt by some generous Knife Knut.

I've dealt with Mr Boye on a couple of occasions and he is very good to work with, I purchased a couple of his knives one recently from him direct, the Boye/Loveless Persona and it is a very hansome knife with Desert Iron wood handle.

I dont see anything wrong with the Boye Dendritc knives pushing into the custom market. If anything custom makers will have to be more competitive. With all the great factory folders out there the custom makers have adapted and prevailed. And Boye has probably invested quite a chunk of money in his project, as I have with the Talonite........
