I take back everything I said about the AECA Chicago show based on last year!

While there were still many Case & Randall collector tables, there were more makers this time. Some of the people present: Phillip Booth, Bub Worrell (had a beautiful Jambiya), R. B. Johnson, Ken Steigerwalt, Patrick Nihiser (outstanding folders--this guy will be one to keep an eye on), Zaza Revishvili, Chuck Hawes, and Mark Nevling.

I picked up a Matthew Lerch frame lock:

Matthew makes a sweet knife, Summer! Enjoy it!

How were the crowds today? There were tumbleweeds blowing down the aisles yesterday. Unless there was some serious cash being spent today and tomorrow, most of those guys won't be back next year.

What did you think of Bub's first attempt at carved steel? Next, he's moving onto gold inlay engraving. He just hates not knowing how to do things!

Mark Nevling is a super nice guy. Watching him grow over the past few years has been a singular pleasure in knife collecting. To see the difference between what he was making three years ago and today is like black vs. white.

Did you handle Zaza's sword? What stunned me more than Zaza's exceptional embellishment was how light and well balanced it was.

Brian,
sorry I missed you--I could only come down on Sat. There were a fair amount of people today, enough to bump elbows, but I didn't exactly notice knives flying off the tables either. Except for Pat Nihiser--he said he had done very well.

You are right about Mark Nevling; he had a bowie that almost found its way into my collection! He is doing some excellent sheath work too.

Every time I see Bub's work he is pushing the limits. He is getting more and more creative. That piece you picked up last spring was a great example!

Again I guess I am the odd man out. I attended the show on Saturday and it seemed a lot of business was done on Friday and Saturday was ho-hum. I inquired of the price of an Emerson Custom full Dress 7 and the seller acted like I was bothering her! About the best I saw was Levine's table and the Moran's! Too many sellers with irrational ideas of values. The customs were OK but nothing spectacular. As you can guess, I didn't purchase a thing. Had a good chat with Paul Bash of AG Russell about trying to determine the history of a Remington R1123 purchased in the 70's before the current reproductions started in 1982. Paul is really a great guy and really interested in knives and collecting. Saw a George Stone "Brook Trout" knife but the seller said George was dead and AG Rusell was selling the same knife for $340 so I didn't even bother to make a realisitc offer(from my point of view). My next show will be Edgerton and I will be there on Friday this time. - Dick
