Ok heres the thing. As any of you who have read my postings know,I am a newby maker.I was having a hard time controlling the grind line on my hollows. Then I had an epifany.I clamped a piece of steel to my tool rest as a guide, and damned if it didnt work.I can now grind a hoolow about 100% better than before. It is still far from perfect, but it loks preety good to me.:D SO here is my question. Have any of you had anidea that helped you? On any tool,it doent matter how complex or simple it is please post here and lets see what a little thinking has come up with. Post any pics, sketchs, diagrams,or descriptions and let the bragging begin.:D we could also call it a contest. The winner will receive the unending awe and admiration of those of us who post. THANXALOT.

Probly the bigest help to me is a grinding jib I made out of two pieces of 3/32" O-1. It is about 3" x 1/2" and I drilled and taped a screw hole on eigther end so I could clamp them together. I then hardened them and give them one hour at 250 deg. just to relieve stress. Bolted them together and trued the faces up on the grinder. Then all I have to do is clamp a blade between them and let the end ride on the outside of my grinder's platen and I get perfectly even plung grindes every time. I generly leeve the jig on till I go through 400 grit and check to make sure I dont have to go back with a file. I need to make one out of thicker steel, this was just a quik get-by, but I haven't got around to it yet and this works fairly well.

Soopy, the longer you hollow grind with a jig/crutch, the longer it will take you to learn proper freehand grinding techniques.
You are limiting yourself as to the type and complexity of grinds. Bite the bullet, and learn the right way. You will grind some scrap, but welcome to the club. We have all done that.
It takes a lot of practice to grind well. a crutch should not be a substitute for practice.
I am not criticising you here, a lot of new makers have tried this, the good one's quit using a jig. Just my opinion.;)

How about posting a pic if you can...I really have to see something to get a good idea how to make it or how it works

Thanks

Randy
