Took a flyer on this one today.

Note 6 July 2011: I'm adding this one and only auction photo because the auction will vanish in about a week and you won't be able to pull up the auction to see what it looked like.

Life is like a box of chocolates. E-Bay is like a box of mysteries.

I guess the worst that can happen is I have to send it back.

I thought about it this morning but..... poor pictures and "0" feedback does make it a little bit of a gamble. I did ask the seller if he could provide better pictures. I guess now you'll be providing them....;o). The seller had two listed, one with a buy it now and one being auctioned with a starting bid of $9.99. Strange.

Yes.....my cursor hovered over the BIN for a while.

:D

Those knives don't look like bone to me. And if the sticky stuff is indeed just sticky stuff.....ok.

But, we shall see.

Yeah, I usually stay away from zero feedback guys, too.....but this was a little too tempting for my own good.

Hopefully it will turn out good. The 3 times I got burned on ebay was by sellers with good feedback.

I agree......sometimes it's the ones with 15,000 good (or mostly good) feedback that will gut you.

I always pay with a credit card.....just to be sure I'm going to get my money back if things get ugly.

BG with the kind of luck you have been having lately, it will be another gold strike. LOL. I wish you luck---Ebay is like you say it's a box of chocolates. I have been extremly lucky, nary a bad deal. Be sure and update us.

Am I the only one wondering why you wouldn't clean off something like "sticky residue" before listing the knife? It's not like it's all that difficult to do.

Some people jusl like the knife knowledge to do anything to a knife, afraid they will lessen the value. The antique people are all the time don't try and clean, just leave alone. So someone w/o any knife experience might take that attitude. That is just MHO.

I'm very happy to say that it looks like you are 100 percent correct.

Just opened package and cleaned off "sticky stuff."

Turns out it's a 1992 from the "Buckhorn" series......which is genuine Sambar stag.

That would also be the good old 425Mod steel.

Seems to be in excellent to VERY near-mint condition.

I'd call it a gold-strike for $50.

Pictures later.

I'm grinning.

:)

Adding note to younger Bucks: Don't gamble. It will rarely turn out as good as this.

All's well that ends well.

As I said before, gambling usually does not pay off.

So, was the sticky stuff just tape residue?

A little Goo Gone and all done?

Inquiring minds and all that . . .

BG-- I was watching that one also--so I had a good idea you had a winner. I just had other irons in the fire at the time. Congrats. are in order for you. I knew you were a saavy buyer, so I wasn't too worried. Enjoy.

Thanks, gentlemen all......the sticky stuff was probably from opening packages (as you say, Arfin, probably tape residue).

I grabbed the closest thing I had, which happened to be Flitz Polish and the sticky stuff (there was a lot of it) was gone in about three minutes and the rest of the knife was looking a lot better.

As Bucksforus commented earlier, some e-Bay sellers are afraid to clean an item due to long-standing tradition of letting any collector do his own cleaning and fear of damaging the item.

There are also some that are just busy and maybe even lazy and would rather just sell quick and be done with it.

The blade edge did have a little burr or flat spot out a ways on the belly and I touched that up and got rid of it in about five minutes with a coarse stone. I need to go back and do a little fine tuning on the entire edge.

I suppose I could send it in to Buck for the spa treatment. Maybe I'll get around to that.

This seller could have got a lot more with a little cleaning and decent pictures and a little research to find out it was Sambar stag (not bone like he said) and then a proper and accurate description of the item.

Very nice find BG42EDGE glad it worked out knife looks great, You mentioned Spa Treatment what exactly do they do and do they do folders also? I am just starting to go through the bucks and I am sure some could use a (SPA TREATMENT). Has anyone lost a knife sending in for spa and what is cost and turnaround time. Again very nice knife thanks for sharing
