I opened the box and read the lid. within minutes I was sharpening blades like a pro! It is very easy to use and learn. I bought the pedestal too, good thing because that metal would get painful holding it for a few knives.

It puts a great edge on with the stones that come with the pro kit. I will be buying either their next two finest stones for really polishing and/or a Jap. water stone of high grit. Then I will have a stupid sharp knife.

I sharpened my EDC to 22* per side, and my kitchen knives to 15* per side. See how this works out and go from there.

 !!

Just to warn you, at least with slightly older Gatco stones, specifically the coarse ones: once you wear through the top textured surface, they are MUCH smoother.

IE dressing them on a diamond plate was a BAD idea!

In any case, it's a good system, and anything that makes YOUR knives sharper for YOU is a good thing!

I did that almost imediately. The extra fine and the ultimate finishing hones refine the edge quite nicely. After you have a sharp blade they are then great for maintenance.

I also added a stropping routine after the GATCO to further refine the edge.

I have the model with the Diamond stones. The other day I was at the local farm store and they had the plain stone three stone system for 10.43. I couldn't pass it up.
