Has anyone seen this mark etched, not stamped, on a GEC knife blade?

PROTOMARK.jpg

I saw one with that etched on the pile side of master blade, down near the tang, but definitely on the blade and not stamped on the tang. I have seen other GECs with TEST PRODUCTION RUN etched all the way across a blade, but this mark was smaller, about 5/16 in diameter.

Any ideas?

Already responded elsewhere, but Pattern Production Premier place on first 400 ( I think ) of each new pattern.

I didn't think the number was nearly that high. I thought it was just the initial run of knives. The first Tidioute toothpicks had it, but it didn't make it to any Northfields. I don't think they made 400 Tidoutes before the first Northfields were made.

Well, on both the toothpick and melon patterns they run 3-4 different variants in both serialized and non-serialized with PPP etch. They are not going to be bound by a set number, only by the first run (which will probably always be Tidioute). On the Melon Whittler pattern they made 346 with the PPP etch to include Smooth Goldenrod, Jigged Goldenrod, SC Stag, and Pumpkin Patch.
