i have not been such a big fan of gerber ever sense i used the bear grylls version that steel is horrible. But i have recently come across the gerber gator drop point and it is 154cm steel! When i saw this i said " what!" i almost still dont believe it especially when i see the price. I need to know if anyone has used this knife and if so HOW IS IT!??????

is the heat treat good?

Picked up two of the 154cm Drop Point Gators as as back up blade or trade items when every body was getting ready for the Y2K Scare.
wound up using one at work as a beater blade. It has turned out to be a very good knife, the blade holds an edge for a long time. and sharpens back up easy.very ergonomic grip shape.Ionly wish all of Gerber Products were as good as this one.

Antiquated? It still does for me today what I required of it when I bought it, so why is it antiquated? Plenty of people still use their grandfather's Case Peanut and those are far from modern designs.

Like any gerber, the HT on the steel is run a tad low, but it holds up well enough, I have an EZ-Out in S30V, that fills as my beater.

By antiquated I suppose he means two hand opening and no pocket clip, but it's such a huge handle I don't think it would be comfortable in pocket.

You can always flick it out if you depress the lockbar, which also creates the resistance when opening. Or wave it, plenty of blade to sacrifice in that application. Hell, get a drill and throw in a thumbstud. problem solved.

You can always put a thumb stud on it like on the one some put on the 110 Buck.* Works pretty good - as that is what I have on the one I carry in the console of the truck. Wally World only had three of them so I bought all as I needed one for the Tackle Box and another for the shop.!* They are all going to be users as no collector value in them.* I picked up my Studs at a Knife Shop in Knoxville and they work just like they were made for them and they get the job done.

Cheers Gladiator , just trying to work out if customs will confiscate it or not. -- So its a 2 hander then : )

I have an old Gator and it is a great knife to use. The only thing I don't like about it is the tacky synthetic rubber coating on the handle. It makes it very difficult to slip in or out of a pocket or sheath. It sticks to your hand well - and eveything else too. But I love the design. I have a number of older Gerbers that are daily users.
