I have done several searches for the Gerber Legend series of multi-pliers and see that a few of you have them. I have also read the review at the Equiped website. Just wondering what the general consensus is on this product. It has most of the features that I am looking for without unwanted tools and the blade can be opened one-handed. I currently have the Leatherman Pulse, and am okay with it, but would like a tool in which the functions can be accessed without opening the pliers and without the typical “clumping” headache. What are your thoughts?

I have had the Legend a few years and carried it all the time prior to getting the Wave. I am pretty fair about evaluating multi-tools (I think) and the only less than perfect comment I could make is that the handles open too far(wide) for my hands. Two real pluses are the wire cutter blade which can be rotated, and the ability to change saw blades. I couldn't complain much if it was the only tool I had. ;)

I carried a Gerber Legend for quite a while before switching to the SOG PowerLock. My wife had her own Legend and still carries it every day. It's a great design featuring several significant innovations. It is well made. I can recommend it without hesitation.

My reasons for switching to the PowerLock were a matter of personal preference and types of use. I found that I liked the wider opening pliers and greater leverage of the SOG.

The initial Legends had the plier handles open too wide. They've fixed it now. The newer models have a better feel.

How do I know? I bought 6 of them for my staff a few years ago. They've all broke... including mine :grumpy: Yeah, Gerber has replaced all of them, but none of us use it heavily anymore. I compared it to a Swisstool a while back, and it's no contest... the swisstool is a much heavier duty tool, and is built better.

The thing that bothers me the most about the Legend is that there's way too much blade play on the tools. If I adjust the pivots to where I can barely open the tools with both hands, there's still noticeable play. to have the tools open smoothly, the play is so bad that I worry about something falling off!

I suggest you look at the Swisstool, or the Charge (although I'd personally wait until Leatherman refines it a bit...).

Does LM have a constant programme of improving the tools cos I bought a Wave when they first came out and also bought another last Christmas for a friend - I couldn't see any difference between them ?

Just wondering though ... if you do buy a Charge now and say 6 months later they start producing a more "refined" version ... could you "accidentaly" break your tool then send it back and get a new refined model ??? :)

Hmmmm, while I guess it would probably work, you'd have to make sure you break it right, so it doesn't appear non-accidental ;) Personally, I'd sell it instead. Otherwise my conscience (read: my wife) would make me feel guilty for years :D That's why I always wait a bit before buying a new product...

I've never broken a set of pliers on my Gerbers, and they all got hard use.

I carried the original Gerber for many years, with no problems whatsoever. I switched to a wave when they first came out, and promptly broke the pliers the first time I used them. I currently rotate between a Gerber Legend 800, and a SOG PowerLock. I prefer the PowerLock to the Legend because of the pliers.

I'm waiting for the Charge to poliferate the stores and dealers more, then I'm going to try one. I liked the original wave, but the pliers were way too flimsy.
