gerber or buck

For classic hunting knives: Buck

For Tactical knives: Gerber.

Have a good decision, but talking about these two manufacturers... any choice is good choice.

gerbers are almost all china knives. I know Buck has ome china stuff but all there good knives are still US made

Honestly, the first 'good' knife I ever bought was a Buck..."Woodsman", I believe it was called (basically a "Special" with a Kraton handle)...and I loved it. However, I have owned several Gerber's since; Outback Bowie, Gator, and now a "Profile" (the best value-for-money I've had). I love buck, but the Gerber stuff has yet to disappoint. I hated the fact that they went to some Chinese made stuff (including my "Profile"), but can you really name an "ALL AMERICAN" company anymore (let me head you Busse, SR, etc. fans off at the point...not everyone has expendable money right now to purchse ANYTHING over $100.00) that you can find in a retail outlet??? Personally, I think Gerber has some excellent stuff for what they ask. I haven't been that impressed with Buck; they seem to be in 'gadget' mode.

Just my opinion.
Jeremy

(personally, I have in my B.O.B a nearly 10 year old Fallkniven A1...just VG10...a Gerber "Profile", and a Hewlett "JewelStik", amongst other things)

Buck... I have a Buck/Mayo TNT and Mayo/Waimea that I absolutely love. I've found myself carrying one of the Buck/Mayo's more often than I do my Sebenza.

Oh yeah, and my EDC is a Kershaw Junkyard Dog. I've quit carrying the Blue handled BM Osborne Axis (Oct. 2002 limited...I won't buy it if I won't use it, and I got a great deal...totally sharpened, anodizing rubbed off, etc. Sorry BM collectors!) since.

I am a big fan of Gerber and have quite a collection of the military ones. a Yari II, 2 LMF II's, a Prodigy.

I recently bought a Buck /Strider fixed blade spear point that i have fallen head-over-heels for though. Buck just doesnt make many military type knives and thats what im into. however, they make many good traditional multi-blade folders. -- Eric

There was a time in the 70's when I would have said, "Gerber." At that time Gerber was doing inovative designs and materials, though not innovative blade steels. I do not consider Gerber designs to be pushing the envelope today and their knife steel and heat treat is the same as it was in the 70's. That gives them inferior performance to what I can get for a simiar price. Moreover, their quality is extremely spotty. Some models are well built, many are not.

For me, Buck gives superior performance for the price. Granted that their tacticals are mostly Chinese, but the quality of their Chinese imports is superior to the quality of Gerber's Chinese imports. At the same time, Buck's American-made line, which is mostly geared toward hunting rather than tactical, gives excellent performance for the dollar.

I prefer Buck knives to Gerber.

My thing with Buck is that they keep trying all of these 'gadget' knives. When is the last time you saw them introduce a new fixed blade? ANY kind of new fixed blade? I'm not talking about a stag handle, or a diffrent blade steel. Gerber, at least, has moved on to trying new things.

P.S.
I hate the new MK2; should've been plain edge.

Hmm. On sheer quality, I would say Buck. However, I really do like Gerber, and even their Chinese made stuff (Ripstop, Fatty) has been good.

However, if anyone is thinking of buying a Nautilus, don't. It's pretty much useless as a tool.

Buck does 154CM and ATS34 in addition to their standard 420HC. I've also seen a gew Bucks in S30V. How much better do you want to get?

And the new Gen 5 hunter does not count as a new design?

Buck does a lot of hunting knives in their American made line. For my money, they do hunting knives better than Gerber does tacticals.

Buck for me.

I like my older Gerber knives just fine, but nothing of their's recently has caught my eye enough to even bother buying.

Seems that Gerber is currently marketing to the mall ninja / Sgt. Wannabe crowd, and at a quality/price point only slightly above Fury.

BUCK FOR THE WIN!!:D

Gerber makes SOME good knives, but most of their stuff is junk (IMO). Not to mention, Gerber ruins most of their good knives with serrations. (Serrations suck, IMO) They used to be a top tier company back in the day (before I was even born).

Buck, on the other hand, produces most of their products in the US, and even their Chinese-produced knives are of good quality (from what I hear). They have a custom shoppe, where you can either get a custom 110 or Alpha Hunter made to your specifications. And I like their designs better than Gerber's. I prefer traditionals over so called "tacticals," at least when it comes to fixed blades.

Personally, I prefer Buck over Gerber.
