Ghurkas vs Qianlong Chinese question

I am asking for information from some of the Ghurka history scholars on the Forum. I have heard a surprising factoid that I don't want to believe!

I have heard that in the 1750's during the Qianlong emperor's reign, the Qing armed forces defeated the Gurkhas twice in Tibet; on the second go, a combined force of Manchus, Chinese, and Tibetan allies chased them clear over the Himalayas into Nepal, and forced the King of Nepal to sue for peace. Nepal paid tribute to Beijing until the mid 19th cent.

Anybody know anything about this?

Ghorka took place of Malla in 1768, then got beaten by Qianlong emperor's army by a war in 1790 - 1792. Then GB beat Ghorka by "Ghorka war" 1814 - 1816, and the occupation continued until 1923.
Hope this helps.

There's a very brief mention of this in the early part of Peter Matthiessen's "The Snow Leopard," but it does not go into the level of detail that was supplied by Wrongfriend.

Bill,
Volumes 1 & 2 of "Nepal" by Perceval Landon go into quite a bit of detail on this. I was surprised by how much antagonism there was between China, Tibet and Nepal and how massive and important the trade was.

The excellent link Berk has provided has some of the same info and easier to get to.

Nepal has been pretty militant in the past and was always testing borders. Thanks for links and help.

Berk,
Thanks for the great link.

John,
Thank you for the references also.

Me too.

Berk,

Yes it is a possum. I trapped her in my back yard and my wife and I studied her for a while. She was really very gentle. Strange little creature with a pouch like a flannel pocket.

The picture is an unretouched closeup. The "hand" is really a back foot that she had twisted around. The expression is called a "gape."

I am not that much of a wildlife buff and after a while we let her go, but it is a weird image.
