My Dad left me one of these when he died, and I have been interested in trying it out since the blades would be much cheaper. Does anyone know what to do with the "adjustment" part? By turning a collar on the handle the angle which the blade sits at can be changed, but I can't figure out why this adjustment is important. Does this serve a purpose or was this just 1960's sales hype? Thanks.

I have a similar razor, and I find the adjustability comes in handy for multiple steps. Mine runs from 1 through 9, 9 being highest. A 3 works well for initial shaving to remove the majority, while 1 is then used to finish. I haven't shaved in a few days, so tonight will be a 5-3-1 progression.

I've been using one of these for about 30 years (literally). I leave it
set on 6. I find Platinum Plus blades are best, if you can find them.
You do need to keep it cleaned out, rinse after each stroke or it
tends to load up.

Of course you can always go the the new Fusion 5 blade :-0
What a joke!!! One edge has always been quite enough.

Thanks for replying. I checked out some of the posts that randydance pointed me to, and most stated that the adjustments were for coarseness of beard 1 being for light beards and 9 being heavy. I have been using mine on 6 also Rich, with good results (less clogging than my old atra). I might give adjusting down a try for a second pass as S&S recommends. Thanks again for helping out. It is an amazing little device compared with some of the plastic gangmowers out there, and it's nice to keep it in use.
