Last night I fired up the Thunderbolt grease slapper. (my grinder) I have been using the glass platen trick for about 5 months or so, I really like it,

Anyway, the superglue let lose just as i touched the steel to the belt.

My water bucket under the grinder caught the most of it the rest of the plate glass broke it little cookie crumbs, although at a high rate of speed.
Man was that exciting.
I think it was because of the cold snap we just had, I've used the platen in cold weather before but this was a severe drop it just 8 hours or so.

I used Loctite super glue, may try something else next time, oh by the way didn't even harm my regalite belt.

Life is what it is

Mike, I've never liked superglue for that kind of thing. I use little dabs of JB weld. It has some flex where the superglue is just brittle.

Whew, glad ya didn't get hurt by the flying glass Mike!! You might want to try dap weldwood contact cement.

Take care!! Michael

Always think of your fellow knife makers as partners in the search for the perfect blade, not as people trying to compete with you and your work!

Buzzards gotta eat, same as worms!!!

you are lucky you didnt get hurt! Is that tempered glass? cause thats what you should be using........I agree with the above post about a better bonding agent....superglue sucks really.....its good for a little while and thats all.....the smart thing to do would be to get a diamond drill and drill and csink the glass so you can bolt it on! You can always replace your stuff...not your eyes or your manly parts!!!

Try pure silicone next time. It won't let go and will have lots of flex. Glad you weren't hurt.

I use two part epoxy to hold the glass on my platen. It holds well as long as I don't over heat it too much. Even when I do overheat it the epoxy just becomes less clear in the overheated area. I've replaced it a few times when it looks bad, and even then I have to use a chisel to get under the glass to knock it off. I have a platen that doesn't have glass on it that I try to use when I don't need the benifits of the glass.

I appreciate the kind words and concern, yes thank you Lord, I wasn't hurt.
I'll give the silicone a try.
