Going crazy: ZT0392 vs Reate Torrent (vs cheaper EDC knives as well)

Hey guys,

So my BD is coming up and since January I had this idea to gift myself a knife for EDC, I don't know where I got it from but it's been making me some kind of a knife lunatic. I've been literally slacking work and watching videos about knives, steels, sharpenning and what not, I just don't see the end of it, everytime I learn/find something new...

Anyways, I need to make a choice. This will be my first ever knife and the only ones I've ever touched were ZT0566cf (loved it, but price ($235 here) to materials ratio is bad), BM561/566, BM940-1, BM 481...

From all the info I gathered it seems like the knives I like the most are:

1. Reate Torrent
2. ZT 0392 Gold or Black
---------------------------
3. ZT0562cf
4. ZT0452cf
5. ZT0450
6. Any of the above + customization from one of the masters.
7. Wait for Reate Wave or ZT0456

So the prime candidates are first two. If you would be to debate on which is better/cooler, what would you say?


P.S. I'm even contemplating taking a 1200 km (745miles) trip to another country to touch ZT's and perhaps buy one of those 0392... I'm going crazy, guys!
 
Congrats on your new addiction:-) Those are all great choices you mentioned. Personally for a first blade I would recommend the 0562 if you don't mind the size, it has great action, steel, and is a beast of a knife. The 392 is great....but tahts like getting a corvette when you have never driven above 60mph...maybe ease your way there.
 
For its price you can't beat the 0562CF. Of the top two I'd go with the Torrent since a 0392 will cost you a good $250+ more.

Thank you! :) And yeah, my first car was a BMW e60 535d. Biggest financial mistake I've ever made, thats for sure (youngsters with above average income, don't fall for this temptation!!!). Though I'm not sure if the same concept applies to knives (maybe it does?).

About the 0562 size. Thats the thing, I don't have a chance to put it in my pocket, I can't hold it and see how it feels, I can't do anything, but add a few cm's to the lenght of 0566 which I've touched and try to imagine how it would be. ... That is unless I make a sick Riga - St. Petersbourg trip to actually feel all ZT knives in real life. From YT videos the size difference doesn't seem all that big.

When all is said and done ZT0392 is ~$100 more expensive if I order torrent overseas or the same, if I go crazy and order from the EU dealer for a shorter delivery time. EU import tax is such BS...

Does the smaller price difference change your opinion?

You should try and hold them back to back. They're both great and personal preference will dictate.

Don't really have a chance to do that, unless I travel really far from home, but I can't afford to spend ~$500+ just for travel expenses. Couldn't find any Reates in Russia. Found in Finland, but they don't have LE ZT's...

Anyways, yesterday at night I put up an order for Torrent, but they didn't send the full payment details until 17 hours passed and by that time everything changed...

There was one knife I didn't mention, because I thought the chances of getting it are basically zero. And what do you know, it got listed in quite rare specs, exactly those that I've wanted! Basically a miracle! Ofcourse I instantly bought it, but I think I'll keep the intrigue for now and wait for it to arrive. You know it's special when I pass on Torrent and 0392 for it.

I'm so pumped, guys!!!

My thoughts...

I own a ZT 0392 and Reate Horizon Ti. Both ooze quality, flip wonderfully, and feature premium materials. They feel and sound slightly different in how the detent breaks and the blade locks up, hard to describe. All things being equal (and of course they aren't), I would choose the ZT over the Reate. However, given the prices of the ZT, that might sway me to a Reate.

My next choice in your list would be the 0452CF. Pictures do not do that knife justice. I'm hoping they come out with a sprint run with higher end steel (yes I am aware of the 0454).
