Hello Everyone,
I have been using straight razor for about 6months now. I bought two from BudK.com for $8.00 (for the both). I used to work in a slaughter house de-boning hams so I know about putting an edge on knives. The problem is these razors cut my beard but is is more of a pulling cut than a smooth cut. I have put them on a stone and then stroped. I used coarse, medium and fine stones in respective order then stroped.....still can't get a pain free shave or CLOSE shave. The blades are advertised as 420 stainless steel. I don't know anything about steel. Is the steel the razors are made of the problem?
I would appreciate any advice anyone would be willing to give.

Thanks!!!!!

The Maintenance, Tinkering & Embellishment forum has quite a few discussions on sharpening and gets quite a deal more traffic than this forum. You might want to ask this question in there as well.

You may want to move up to a name-brand razor, the problem may be the 420 steel or perhaps at $4 apiece the heat-treat and build quality is probably not very good. If you don't want a new Thiers-Issard ($70 and up) you could check out the buy/sell/trade forum at Straight Razor Place and pick up a good used razor, shave-ready, for a good price.

Yup! Straight Razor Place is tops! They'll take good care of you there.

My guess is that you have cheap razors, possibly made in Pakistan, that will never hold a decent edge, no matter what.

Go to http://www.straightrazorplace.com/forums/index.php and they will educate you on what are good razors, where to get them, how to care for and use them, and some neat history.

Some good brands to look for (even on EBAY) are Dovo, Wade and Butcher (my favorite), Genco, Dorko, Puma, Double-Duck (great, and rare), to name but a few. Be sure to note the conditon of the blade and scales.
