IF I enjoyed folders, I guess I would choose the 500 series as my favorite. I sort of did that in the seventies with the 501 that has been in my pocket ever since. That is old trusty at the top of the picturre. But the 500 series seems so well made and carefully designed that I just like them. Here are a few. I also don't do etched blades very often.

Can't seem to get it to post in SPS.

Tele, I like the 500 series as well. A great set. Thanks, DM

I'd say you must have put those top three to good and frequent use Tele!

They are a favorite of mine too...would love to score a "Master" series, like your bottom knife, some time!

Tele,
if you sent those back to Buck for a spa job they would really come out nice. I sent back a 501, similiar to your topknife and they rebladed it, buffed and polished it and it came out nice

I thank those of you who suggested that a spa treatment is appropriate for the top three 501s in my picture. Let me clear up a couple of things.

First, the top one will never get a spa treatment since it has been in my pocket for the past 35+ years. It will wear down just as its owner has worn down. The next two are more illusion than fact. The "scratches" are actually the result of lighting and extremely detailed photography of the residue of my oily hands. Both are difficult to photograph since they are so highly reflective but be assured that they are new in the box 501s and in mint condition. I have attempted to do a better job of picture taking but still cannot capture the best results to show the absence of any damage.

I thought thats what it was! If some only knew how hard that second 501 is to come by. I have two like your third and they're getting hard to find. So, I feel lucky. Is there a date on any of those papers (back bottom right)? Thanks,DM

Recently acquired a 501 from 1992 and must say it's a nice little blade. Ever since I started collecting the 701 series I've kind of taken a liking to the 425M steel and this little 501 goes right along with that area of my budding collection. In fact it's in my pocket today as my EDC. Will probably start adding more of these in the near future.

There is a date on one of the papers but it is not much help. The top one in the picture, (the tan colored one) has a date of 4/4/72. That is not much help since, I believe that the 501 was introduced three hears later in 1975. The one with the white paper has no date only the legend, "SN501" in the lower left hand corner.

Not much help, I am afraid, for the history of the knives.

Tele, Thanks. While your correct this paper and its subsequent date is not much help. It is an indicator and tells us that these care papers can run 'years' behind the knifes actual mfg. They don't run congruent with each other. The papers are bought, printed and used up along the way, some dates may run closer and others as your example. Its good to consider this in collecting. DM
