Hey all. Unfortunately, I had to send my Starmate back to Spyderco because of bad grinds...very dissapointed. :-( I sent it out on August 23. Yesterday I called to see what the hold up was and was dissapointed to learn that the Starmates were back ordered and that it would take a while for them to make some more. The person I was speaking to, Mike, offered to send me another knife instead, I decided to get the Chinook. Although I've been without my knife since August 23, I thought that Spydercos CS was still pretty good. They did the right thing by offering to substitute another knife. Too bad they were out of Starmates though. I'll have to order one later, love that knife. However, I was going to buy the Chinook later anyway, so it all worked out. I can't wait to get it...looks like a really tough and well built knife. Someone posted a pic here comparing it to a BM knife...the Chinook dwarfed it! I really like the various Keating videos, so I'm curious to see how this knife will perform/handle. Hopefully it will be here by sometime next week...I hope so... Has anyone had any experience with the Chinook? Has anyone done any extensive testing on it? It will be carried daily along with my only other Spyderco, the Military. I know...I need to get some more...Hopefully I will soon...Anyway, I'll post my impressions of the knife when I get it...hopefully next week. Later.

I love Bowie knives and follow Keating's expolits in teaching Bowie techniques, so the Chinook was irresistable to me. I bought one and I find it to be one monster tank of a knife! It is a Buck 110 writ large and made with modern materials and with great care for detail. This is a compliment, you understand, in that I am trying to say that the design is a classic.

I did, however, find it a bit too heavy for in-pocket carry. I should think in-waistband or in a holster of some kind would do the job. It is built like a bank vault, very solid and very tight.

If you have followed Keating's theories on the "back cut", you should feel right at home with the Chinook as a self-defense weapon. The clip-point is designed for just exactly that technique, just as it is on a Bagwell Hells Belle fixed blade Bowie. There was a very good test of the knife a few issues back in Tactical Knives, but I don't remember which month. The author lent it to a black powder shooter friend who took it on a deer hunt and loved it as a hunting/skinning knife, saying that it had just the right amount of belly for the work.

Good luck with your new knife and I hope you love it as much as I love my StarMate.

It's a great little (!) knife and it shows what a good lockback is all about.

What a coincidence. I just ordered one today, and I live in the Hickory, NC area. I have always wanted a big folder, and the Chinook just looks way cool. Big D1

Yeah, I know where Hickory is...Looks like one sweet knife...I'm sure we won't be dissapointed. I'll have to watch some of my Keating tapes to find the bowie stuff again. I think that the Legacy of Steel tape has some of the bowie stuff on it. I'm not used to thinking about backcutting as no of my other folders were really suitable for it. I'll have to start practicing it some...adds a whole new dimension.

I've got one on my list. I too find the design irresistable. I'd have one already if I hadn't decided to buy a Wegner first. Enjoy your new knife.

Jeff/1911.

I'm a recent Chinook owner.
Never thought I could spend over a hundred bucks on a [folding] knife. For this one, I made an exception.
I can see myself growin' old with this knife :o
Nuff said.

You will enjoy owning it ElectricZombie--AND Big D1.

Jeff/1911, the Wenger is next on my list. I fondled one at the recent gun and knife show, and it fits my hand like a glove.

Guns&Knives, I am glad you like the Chinook. If you need information on where to get knives cheaper, just let me know. I paid $90.00 for the Chinook, and I can get the Wenger for $78.00.

ElectricZombie, I will have to investigate the back cutting techniques further. It sounds really interesting.
Good Day, Big D1

Electric, did you ever get your Chinook? I received mine today, and all I can say is that the Chinook is an awesome knife. I hope you get yours real soon. Big D1

D1, not yet. If I don't get it by Friday, I'll call Spyderco and see what the problem is. Glad you like your knife, can't wait to get mine.

Funny thing is, I now have caused two other guys to want a Chinook just by carrying mine. One of them is the boss.
First reaction is, "Whoa..."
Of course, the Chinook is just as serious a cutting tool and weapon as it is impressive-looking.

This Xmas, looks like I'll be giving away Spydercos to certain people who've bee good to me this year...

BigD1, DiscountKnives has been good to me and I thought prices are good when comparing. Does your vendor/source have a website?

...The waiting is killing me...I hope it arrives soon!...It's coming directly from Spyderco so hopeully I'll get it by Friday. Can't wait to test it out...going camping in the next few weeks so that should be adequate...D1, have you done any tests with it yet?

I called Spyderco today, and they said that the Chinook has not yet shipped due to a recent inventory check at Spyderco. I was assured that it would ship on Friday. I'm guessing it will be here on Wednesday or Thursday. Oh well...

I love mine.., boy what a TANK!

I tried out IWB carry of my Chinook over the weekend. Please see my post, "Carrying the Chinook", for my comments.
