Not many people may know of Don Greenaway..but, I have been tracking him and this particular knife for awhile...

A little background..the blade, bolsters, handles and back spacer are all damascus of his own making..using Nickel and Carbon Steel to give it that LIGHTENING look to the blade..look at the notched out thumb disc, it is actually layered down onto the blade..he also used 5 screws versus many makers 2 or 3..of which i would later find out why..

I spoke to Don about making me one since I had given up on this one..He told me he had over 150 hours in this particular knife as EVERYTHING WAS DONE BY HAND with special grinding to get the handles to work..He sadly told me it was a ONE TIME knife for someone who wanted a small knife (3.25 inch blade) that would cut like a bowie but, carry like a sunday knife and be pretty enough to carry to church but would last him a lifetime in the mountains of Ark...this knife was the result..and due to his health, it was probably not possible to get another...

Don Greenaway is apparently world know for his folders, Damascus and attention to detail..KnifeArt.com has a nice write up about him...anyway, I finally located her and she will be arriving shortly..ENJOY!

What an absolutely stunning knife! It is one that I would sure be proud to own. I love that it is totally made from damascus and the lines are great.

Ok, so why five screws and how did you manage to get this knife you have been after for so long? I would be very interested to see more of the story behind this knife.

That's just absolutely gorgeous. It's very subdued by intricate. I like fancy folders that aren't too garish. You have great taste.

Dude, how do you afford all this stuff!? My guess is that you're either a programmer or a very, very high-priced hooker :D .

Zero

Edit: dammit! I thought I'd finally beat Keith, but he just slips in under the wire!

Thanks Keith(BTW Keith...i read the GBU...what bull$#*@..i have seen enough of your post to know how helpful and insiteful you are..ROCK ON BROTHER!) and Zero (just a cop..that works alot of off-duty and spends alot of time (and money) searchin' for neat knives)..

I saw the knife about a year ago..and being a cop, i like tactical knives but, i also wanted something purty..Well, I saw the knife at Daniel's BladeGallery (who has some killer art/tactical knives) and kinda went from there..it showed up at another popular knife site..and just happened my internet was down so i missed it..i left my name and number in hopes of a back-out by the other buyer.

With no other alternative, i gave Mr. Greenaway a call..Don was quite a gentleman and immediately put me at ease..he walked me through the entire process of how/why he makes folders.."they have to be able to chop a good sized piece of wood and still shave your arm and i personally open and close them hundreds of times to check fit and finish and if it ain't right..it don't leave" so, he said he makes his own damascus using Nickel, ect..to get the right mix that will chop, cut and and stay strong yet, sharpen right back up...Don told me he had been really down on his health..but, was finally getting back to strength..additionally, he told me that he put between 150 to 200 hours (geez @$10 hr. thats...) in that folder alone..and at the time, put all he his pride, knowledge and expertise
in this one knife, as if it would be his last..the 5 screws are to give the handles torx strength with the liners and to ensure all stays intact..he gave me about a 15 minute reason..but, my mind was swimming..anyway, he ended with..i doubt that folder could ever be re-created..:(

In the time spent just getting the Damascus handles to fit he could make 2 knives..besides the precision that he just wasn't sure he was capable of...

Well to make a LONG story short..i got the call, the buyer backed out and i am the NEW OWNER!

Thanks for the kind words.

Congratulations on getting this beautiful knife. It sounds like one you plan on having until it gets passed to someone else.
