Got my first Gunting today!

Congrats Rick, glad to see you are enjoying it.;)

Please do remember not to kinetically open the knife on your leg unless you enjoy hospitals.

The Gunting is one of the better made models, in my opinion. It's also the most left friendly compression lock Spyderco made.

Now you'll be needing a trainer and the videos. Trainers can be gotten just about everywhere. Videos can be gotten here:

I am totally amazed at how the prices have just literally exploded on the Gunting since they discontinued it. I have 2 and you couldn't pry them away from me.

I just recently discovered that there were some colored versions as well i.e. blue, orange.

The Blue model is the Crmpit-a Leo tool. The orange were a custom run for/by Martin Mueller, they are rescues.

And both are pretty tough to get a hold of;)

I bought a Gunting plain edge, stainless steel clip with it being numbered 317 from an eBay seller. I knew nothing of this knife since I'm relatively new to knives but I knew I wanted this piece. Does the number on the fin signify it being a collector model? What about the differences between the black clip versus the stainless steel version? I saw another one on eBay that lacked the number on the fin and had a black clip. I was thinking I may have overpaid for mine ($355) and thought about getting this one thinking it would be less. Well, it sold for $493 (Yikes!!) so I'm happy with what I bought.

Actually, the one you have is an unusual variant, so while you did pay a large chunk of money, you did at least get something different for it. The 440V PE model had clips that were primarily black, and only a few were stainless clipped.

Not sure of the exact number ranges, but I believe the 200s were stainless clipped, and apparently all the way into the 300s, since you've got one.

Most that come up are black clipped. But to perfectly honest, the stainless clip wears better, as the black coating comes off eventually. I believe thats why the later S30V models had stainless clips.

Now the $493 Gunting, that was just wild. Makes me want to turn around and put all of mine up on Ebay.:D

Thanks for enlightening me on the Gunting I bought. The one that went for $493 on eBay recently had the black clip. I thought it would be much less thinking I'd get it and sell mine but it wound up costing a lot more than what I paid for mine. I like the stainless steel clip since it ties in with the blade.

One observation I made on all the Guntings coming up on eBay is that the combo blade models can be had for $100-$150. The plain blade must me more rare and desirable. I noticed this trend on many other Spyderco knives as well.

Yeah this seems to happen all the time. Collector's seem to prefer plain edge for some reason. Really don't know why though.

So anyone that wants a Gunting cheap, should probably aim for the combo edge. They usually never get above $150, if even that.
