How about this for a thread topic?

Automotive-GPS makers: TomTom vs. Garmin vs. others.

Any thoughts on the differeneces?

I find the Garmin menu system easier to use than TomTom.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 755 and much prefer it to the other brands I've used (Tom Tom & Magellan).

Magellan, Garmin, Tom Tom are the order they are ranked in Consumer reports. I use to work for a place that sold all kinds of GPS systems. Garmin and Tom Tom I found to be the most reasonably priced for the extras/features you get. I feel that Tom Toms are a bit cheaper product then the others. I have used both the Garmin and Tom Tom and found them both very easy to use. No experience with the Magellan but they are ranked #1 for a reason I'm sure just they seem to be the most pricey of the lot.

I like the Garmin menu system best. The Garmins are also priced aggressively for the features you get but, they are not the cheapest. However, the extra ~$20 I spend adds a lot of value to the package.

My current Auto GPS unit is a Garmin wide screen model I got for $150 during Christmas and has proven to be money well spent. The level of detail in the maps is what makes the biggest difference IMHO. Garmin factory maps seem to be better then the others. If you are willing to spend another $100, you can get aftermarket maps that are better then those included for free at the factory.

Ive seen allot of the Magellan's for sale that are refurbished. Anybody know anything about these? Are these reliable, or is it really just worth it to buy the thing new?

I have no idea regarding Magellan. I drove for a couple of days with a Garmin and a TomTom. I was sold by the Garmin menu systems. They are a lot easier toi use.

I retuned the TomTom and kept the Garmin 765T.

I prefer the Garmin for ease of use (it's almost completely idiot proof) and the fact that it seemed to have more points of interest stored than the others I've tried. Plus, it has the sexiest sounding woman's voice. :D

I had a old Garmin 200 that I loved oh so much, but when a friend decided to move 3000 miles I gave it to him. He played with it for about a week before he left and it got him from his old house to his new one with no issues. He used it to find places to eat and hotels along the way.

He loves it and still uses it...as for me I was forced to buy a more expensive model with a larger screen...Oh woe is me!

Between a TomTom and a Nuvi [garmin] I give the nod to the Nuvi, easier to use, more pleasent to look at, and its very no nonsense. I haven't used anything beyond a Garmin and a TomTom but I've bought two Garmin GPSs and I'm very satisfied with both.

On a side note, if you can find a Garmin Nuvi with Voice reconition its so worth it! All I have to do while driving is push a button that I mounted on my steeringwheel and say a word and say the address of where I want to go and it pulls up directions for me and start navigating.

Just like a MP3 player a GPS is something you wonder how in the heck you lived without once you start using.
