I have very limited shop space, and only plan to make knives at the hobby level (right now...

I have been looking at small belt grinders by Delta, Sears and other companies. On an investment/performance basis, would one of these be a reasonable option, bearing in mind that I really like my wife and kids, so a Burr King or Square Wheel is out of the question?

I started out with a file, then I got the idea of clamping my 3x21 belt sander upside down on the bench... it worked, but pretty scarry at first. I then bought a 1x42 Sears, it worked..... but not as fast as my current 2hp variable speed Burr King. Bottom line... from a file to the Burr King, they all work. It just takes more time with some of them. Good Luck.

P.S. have you looked at the Loveless book on knife making? It shows how to make a knife with only handtools.

Ron -

Thanks for the input. I haven't read the Loveless book - I'm currently working one of David Boye's works called "Knifemaking - You Can Do It" or something close to that. Lots of good info, very similar to a lot of the information in the Blades & Stuff catalog but in more detail.

I'm working with mostly manual hand tools and a variable speed Dremel tool. As you probably know, micarta is a BEAR to work by hand. I don't have a lot of spare time (3 kids and all that entails) and I think a grinder would let me make better use of my spare time.
