I've seen a lot of requests for help on removing rust or just wanting to get a good polished finish back on a Kuk after having to do some serious work to it, for what ever reason. I just wanted to add a different approach than most of you forumites take. I realize not everyone has access to a bench grinder, but if you do I found this method to be very fast and do a great job. I'm a blacksmith and have made knives over the years. I use to start grinding with 36 grit abrasives and go thru the whole range to micron rated belts (2000-4000 grit range) Then buffing. I was turned on to grinding or sanding to 220 grit. THEN use a burlap buffing wheel with black buffing compound (emory). The black compound makes fast work of all those sanding/grinding marks then go to muslin wheels and tripoli then to white compound and you should be in pretty good shape. CAUTION DO NOT PUT A SHARP KNIFE TO POWER TOOLS! Dull it first. Wear a leather apron and leather gloves. I know that polishing Kuks by hand is a Zen process for some of you, more power to you!
