Grinding blades on a disc sander?

I was wondering if anyone out there uses a disc sander to grind their blades? I have a 6" on the side of my belt sander and I've used it to taper tangs and things and was thinking about trying to gring the whole blade on it. It's surface is machined flat, so it's far flatter than the platen on my belt sander.

What do you guys think?

Many folks do in fact grind blades on a disk grinder. I have seen most use a 12 inch disk but a 9 inch would work as well.

You can go horizontal -

or vertical -

Nice set up guys, thanks for your help on this matter. I'm now looking into buying a 9" dedicated disc sander.

I don't know, AT, that pic still looks pretty clean to me. Fer instance, where's the half-filled coffee cup on top the controller, collecting grit for flavor and waiting patiently for it's chance to spill into the controller guts????:D

What I've never understood is how do you hold the blade in the right place every time while grinding? I can do it on my platen because I can see the edge of the belt and where it is making contact. But on a horizontal disc I would have to bend over and crane my neck....hurts just thinking about it! Maybe I should give it a try though and just plunge right on in.... :)

Here's my latest addition -it's my potter's wheel that I bought new in 1972. One hp, DC, variable speed with a 14" disc. The pins hold 1/4" masonite discs - you could put different grits on for a quick change set-up.

Anyway, I thought I would resurrect. this thing. Used potters wheels could be a good source - possibley on EBay? New ones are 600-900, but used can be had a lot cheaper.

Food for thought.

Could one of you guys give a brief description of the technique for grinding on the disk grinders. This sounds interesting but I can't quite see it in my head.
Thanks
Patrick

I'm also interested in learning to flat grind blades on a disc sander, but don't understand how it's done! Need help!! Thanks!

I believe Darrel Ralph does this. There may be some pictures on his site. He use a horizontal disc grinder.
