Griptilian Blade Swap

Hey guys,

I don't get to carry much anymore because I'm in college in Boston (what a combination!), but when I'm home, I like to carry one of my Griptilians. I've had the 550 sheepsfoot for years and it's been great, but my aunt gave me a Griptilian in D2, and I think the blade is a little more practical because of its shape and material.

The problem was that the handle's tolerances were looser on the D2 model: more blade play at the same pivot tightness and the stop pin rattled because it was not long enough (but to be honest, I think it's because the handle toward the lock is flared out a little, which would also cause the blade play). So, I just pulled the pivot pins from both knives, pulled the blades out, and switched them so that the new D2 blade is in my pocket-worn, tighter handle. It's a big improvement.

Just thought I'd let you all know that if you have the desire, the exchange is painless and as you would expect for production reasons, mechanism section of the blade and handles are identical.

I'd send the other knife in to Benchmade. They'll sort it out for you.

... and then you'll have 2 Grips in great condition. BM's W&R has always sent things back to me 100% perfect when I've used them.

I really like my Cabelas set. It's on my 'Protected" list (not open for sale or trade) along with my black blade Ritter set.

I carry my Grip in Boston ;) I just keep it in my pocket out of view. And also, I occassionally need to cut open boxes at work, and since I work EVERY day, I at least have an argument under the statute!

Hey guys,

I'd rather save the fellas in Oregon the trouble because I'm only going to carry 1 Grip and if I ever need to carry the other one, it doesn't bother me that much that the stop pin swivels. The main reason I switched handles was that the other handle was more pocket worn and at some point i had smoothed off some edges to melt it with fine sandpaper.

One complaint is that the blade tends to rub on the scale when I open and close it if any force is applied outward instead of upward. I swapped blades again to make sure it was the blade and not that handle, and sure enough, it was the same way on the other. Again, one of those things that doesn't bother me to the point that I want BM to eat the cost of a D2 replacement. They've always been very good to me and I try to not be too anal about a mid-level knife. The blade is not warped, bent, or out of center when open, it just won't sit right closed. The 550 was always biased the same way but I never noticed rubbing, possibly because of the polished finish.

Thanks for the move, Cougar. This subforum slipped my mind. I must be getting senile. :o

Glad to hear the swap worked out. I've been eyeing a camo-handled 551 griptilian for some time now, the only problem is that I'm not too crazy about half the blade being serrated. I've wanted the camo handle with my 551 satin finish blade. I guess now I don't have to wonder if it will work anymore. Time to save up :D.
