Gut Hooks

Has anybody ever actually used one and if so, do they work? Personally I think they look kind of hokey and having gutted/skinned big game, question there usefulness. I would appreciate any input from someone that has actually used one.

The only time I've ever found one useful was when I was younger, on smaller game , and that was only , to keep an inexperienced hunter from piercing any organs when opening the chest cavity.

Don't know how useful they are, but I hate the way they look.

I have tried a couple and many have too narrow an area in the "hook" and hence they tend to snag up. Buck's Zipper is probably the best I've used but that said, I prefer not to use one. Actually what I have tried and liked them best for was skinning the animal with cuts down the inner leg.
