I've been meaning to post this, but am still playing catch-up, still haven't answered all my mail not made some phone calls I should've, But I will get a round tuit sooner or later.;)

Dave K was kind enough to bring his Katar over so I could check it out when we met in Phoenix.
Guys this thing is solid my gracious screaming weapon through and through!!!!
I never thought I would like the Katar, but after strapping it on I admit that I do.
Not well enough to order one but also not because the Katar isn't dayumed near perfect, just have other priorities.
However if I were younger or more pure weapon oriented I would have no hesitation on getting one!!!!
I was surprised, very surprised at the power the Katar exhibits when strapped on. It's dayumed sure not like picking up a knife or sword and putting it through its paces.
I've often thought I would hate to be on the receiving end of a khukuri and still would, but to meet someone with a Katar and especially two of them strapped on would be like meeting a Tiger with freshly sharpened claws and teeth.
Even an unskilled offense with double Katars would be devastating in the wounds inflicted!!!!
Getting through such a defense would be a very formidable task and one I doubt anyone except the most skilled blade fighter would escape unscathed from and perhaps not even such a highly skilled
person.
I've always thought the Katar a somewhat boat anchor but after seeing and handling Dave's I have had to reassess my thoughts on the Katar.
Indeed the old ones knew what they were doing.:)
The psychological influence alone would be a great deterrent to an enemy facing someone armed with a Katar and if the person were armed with two I could see some enemies turning tail and running!!!!

Does/did HI make a Katar? I would like to see pictures as well. I have one (not an HI), but the hand grip too small to get my big clampers around easily. Hopefully the HI model would have an American sized grip.

Bill,
Very nice example. Have you identified the tools?

Yup, The handles on the real thing are too small. Here is one for scale.

There's pix of the HI katar somewhere -- made per the model Dave supplied and big enough for most western hands.

How much does the HI katar run? Is it a special order item, or is made on a routine basis?

Wow, a katar with accessory tools...
Don't know much about katars but what I've picked up here, but it's my impression that they're pretty unusual?
Really nice!

Wow forgot how pretty that thing looked :D Cant say Im particularly into katars myself, but that one sure looks nice.

Firkin and N2S,

The tools that I can recognise are tweezers, button hook, awl, somthing that looks like a tongue depressor, and a small knife. The Katar blade is damascus inset with gold koftgari. The scabbard is also gold koftgari. I have not tried any testing/cutting.

Put all together it looks like something that the Starship Enterprise should be fighting!

It looks like one way or the other you get to perform surgury.

Look, Uncle Bill, the groundswell of interest in the HI katar has finally materialized, just like I always told you it would! :p

Next up we need a Strider katar...

Well, it is a truely wonderous piece...Thanks for the additional photos. I think I'd just kinda stare at it instead of using/testing it too.

The "tongue depressor" sorta looked like a chakma to me, but I don't know squat.

BTW, do I want to know what surgical use a button-hook has??

That is a cery fancy looking piece. Is it modern made, like Shah Jahans? Or is it one from back in the day?

Keith
