I gotta throw in a good word for HandAmerican--both their products and customer service are top notch. I bought an 8" smooth steel from them awhile back and it rusted in a few spots because moisture accumulated in the leather sheath. That problem was easily fixed with Tuf-Cloth, but I mentioned it here on the forums and Keith from HandAmerican contacts me soon after, as this is an unusual problem. I explained what happened and he offered to send me a new steel. It never even occurred to me to ask for a replacement; instead he emails me about it!
As for smooth leather strops and hones, HandAmerican is the best I've used. I know people get by on carboard, old belts, even jeans, but they got some quality stuff. Their chromium oxide is now available liquid form, much easier to use than anything else out there. I have Lee Valley's stick (more like giant crayon) of chromium oxide, but HandAmerican's stuff works better on flat strops. And you won't find a better smooth, half-grooved, or full-grooved steel anywhere else.
Their also a company that hasn't lost that personal touch; it's always easy to ask questions or get recommendations and actually get replies to your emails. Check them out--they offer fine alternatives to grinding away metal every time your knife dulls.
