Handle Scale "blackening"

This is irrelevant to the performance of the knife, but has anyone else noticed their linen micarta scales turning black in some places? I'm not referring to the normal blackening on the edge of the plane of the scales, but further in towards the fastening screws.

Hey guys. I had the same question when my RC-4 handles got blackened by some of the leather treatment in my sheath. I asked the sheathmaker, Reid, from Sharpshooter Sheath Systems about it and he suggested I just take some warm water and maybe some mild soap and clean it off. I did this with a toothbrush and it worked like a charm. It seems that because the handles are textured they absorb oils from your sheath, hands, etc. BUT, they are essentially plasticized cloth (right?) so they shouldn't really absorb anything. Anyway, it worked great for me. Once they dry they should look like new! If you try cleaning them please let us know how it worked out. I'd be interested to see if it was the same problem.

It just means you are using it!:D I sweat a lot and it doesn't take long before the scales are all black. If it really bothers you just put it under the faucet for a few seconds and pat it dry with a towel. It will look new when it dries.

I wasn't too concerned with the spots but I might try washing them off just for giggles. Thanks for the tip.

Green scrubby and dish soap, give it a good scrubbing, rinse and pat dry. It will be like new again.

That'll do it. That's what I do on any Micarta handle knife I own.

The soap and water scrubbing works great except for one area underneath where the nylon cross strap secures the knife on the molle back. Not a big deal though. Cant wait for this weekends backpacking trip to test the knife in the great out of doors!
