Handle Slop?

Greetings,

How much slop can develop in the handles before you have to start worrying.

A crude measure of slop might be obtained by opening the bali and holding the handles horizontally and then grabbing just one of the handles. On my current practice bali the free handle drops almost the height of the secured handle (at the very end).

I have tried to mash the pivot end of the handles with vise grips ( putting a towel around the end first...) But this did not seem to make much difference.

In addition I suspect the slop is making it very difficult to attempt any arials(?). Any attempt to toss the bali results in random chaos...

I think your handles are not in the best shape...the slop you described probably makes your bali really wobbly and hard to manipulate...

The solution is on Clay's site, one of the tips of the week. It also helps you identify how much "handle slop" is bad:

Oh and by the way, when i fixed my bali handles, i used the banging method with the hammer...a few good whacks on the pivot pins should work.

I hope that helps...all thanks to Clay's site that is...

You need some amount of ~slop~ inorder for the blade to clear the handles properly, I've seen some that were made with very tight tolerances and if you were not careful the blade would bind up and not leave the handle well and a cut was just waiting to happen.

Clay, that link to the V-Open doesn't work? Is the video gone or the link mistyped?

I just checked and it worked fine.

The old page might still be in the cache of your system. Try holding down the SHIFT key and clicking on the link. That'll bring it directly from the server.

Does anyone know if Frost bali's were designed to have a slight amount of slop right out of the box. I noticed on my second hand frost with hidden pivot pins that the liners near the pivot pins seem like they are kind of bent in towards the blade away from the outer brass scales on the handles.

..| |
..| | outer lines: brass scale
|/| |\| 2nd from outer: liners
| | | | center 2 lines: blade
| | | | periods for formating

The two liners seem to act as springs keeping the blade in place. And if you torc the handles while flipping, the "springs" will bend instead of bending the sides of the handle apart.

Is what Im saying true? clue me in if you know something about this....
