I'm pretty sure the handles are staglon not stag. Can anyone tell me for sure. If it is staglon, it makes me think the steel may be stainless. Anyone know if it is 1095 or stainless? Also anyone know the aproximate age of the knife? Just picked up last week. Are they relatively scarce?

Get a free photobucket account. Upload your pictures to photobucket. Copy the "direct link" code. When you want to post a picture, hit the picture icon (7th symbol from the left) and then paste the code in the window that pops up. It seems harder than it really is.

It is easy to do, but confusing as hell the first time.

One of the hardest things about learning things on a computer is being familiar with all of computer terminology that drives people nuts when computer nuts rattle them off. I know people that have been using computers for 10 years that glaze over when you say "COPY and PASTE"

But is the steel 1095 or stainless 440a? And anyone know the years of production run. This is one model I'd never heard of till I bought it. It looks like a forerunner or cousin to the Golden Spike. Scrade seemed to have a thing about Turkish upswept blades.

There are a few variations on the 49er series. Most of the time, if it is Stainless Steel, Schrade marked it SS, +, or Stainless.

Does your knife have a tang stamp? I think by 1973, SCHRADE+ would be the mark for stainless steel. I had one of these a while back, and it was carbon steel. like the early 153UH Golden Spikes.

Hawk The tang stamp is just Schrade USA 498. It was in bad shape when I got ti. Had some nicks in the blade edge. Polished the brass with Flitz and had SMKW polish the blade and sharpen ifor $2.00. No more nicks and now looks like new.

They are a good old knife. I'll bet yours is 1095. I think they all were, but I'm not sure.
