These are available now. They are on the top of mu mist have list. I like the blade shape better than on the original Chinook. Other than the blade shape and mutliple clip position ability, what changes were made? I knew I wanted one of these when I saw the picture, but Mr. Glesser thinking highly of it has sold me for sure.

Does anyone have one? What are your initial impressions?

Hi Dennis.

The blade spine has different type serrations with the sharp edges on the sides of the serrations buffed so it doesn't scratch your hand in the tip down position.

The lock geometry was completely re-engineered.

New lock lever and spring, easier to unlock but stronger.

Lock strength increased from 700 inch/lbs tro over 1000 inch/lbs.

The hanbdle is narrower and more ergonomic.

The half / choil is more ergonomic.

The liners have been skeltonized to reduce weight without reducing strength.

The back spacer was re-designed and skeletonized.

The weight has been reduced by 2 oz to an overall weight of 6 oz.

The blade pivot and lock pivot are new.

The knife screws together.

Exhaustive spine wack testing from multiple angles.

Exhaustiver breaking tests on our "Breaker"

That confirms it. A must have for sure.

The first one was nice, but this one sounds better. That is one thing that I really like about Spyderco. You guys are constantly striving to improve products and make them "better". I, for one, appreciate the perseverance.

Damn... now I'm sure I'll be broke for the next 100 years, cause Spyderco will just keep making better and better stuff!

I have a "Lefty"/tip-up converted (old-style) Chinook, and I'm pretty pleased with it (it's one of my EDC's), but the new Chinook II sounds even better...With its' stronger lock and new blade-profile, as well as the multi-position pocket-clip, this new "fish" is sure to be a winner.

Just got in two Chinook IIs yesterday. You really have to see them in person - this is as serious a folder as I've ever seen. Makes the Persian look like a little gentleman's knife. ;)

Sal, if it's anything like the proto that was at the Spirit of Steel show this past year, I'm definitely in for one.
My main criticism of the orig. Chinook was simply the weight, but those improvements you listed are excellent, great job.

take care,
Ken

Damn I hate these reviews :D

My Chinook II will have to wait behind the ATR and Para Military.

But it is definitely on my short list.

The wait is killing me! I will have one soon though.

I've seen several sites listing Chinook II's for sale.
Something makes me feel the seller has misrepresented an original Chinook or transitional S30V Chinook as a Chinook II; or that the seller does not yet have the Chinook II in inventory but will take my money now.
Call me paranoid, but I have had to return my share of knives over the years and I don't want to do it again, just because I can't identify the knife online, or the seller misrepresents it.
As soon as I see one in a trusted seller's inventory, with no doubt about its actual identity, I intend to buy it.

In the meantime, does the Chinook II have a new product ID number so that I can distinguish it from the C63 and hold the seller accountable?

Hi Ken. No, The ID number is the same. If a new version of a model is close enough to the old, we keep the number and name. Kinda like the new Honda Accord.

If the size is changed, then we'll change the number as well. Sorry if this causes confusion.

At any rate, IMO, you are always better off buying anything from a trusted dealer. Deception, it seems, is to many, an acceptable way of doing business.

Chinook II sounds very interesting. I shall have to take a closer look at it.

Just in case someone hasn't seen it yet, here is a pic:

I meant more in the sense of being tortured by being shown photos of protos for priced-to-own hollow-ground uber-tank folders, such as the Chinook II, but whatever.

Received mine three weeks ago.. While the older knife is beefier, Spyderco had done an excellent job by improving and stream-lining Jim's design without sacrificing its strength and performance... If its a heavy-duty folder that you want, the Chinook II has all your prayers answered.. Can't wait to field test this one with on my pig-hunting trip by the end of this month! :D

UPS just dropped mine off. Wow!!!! Spyderco should be proud of this one. It opens sooooo smooth. No bladeplay in any direction. Not too heavy, but plenty solid feeling. I like it.
