G'day all, has anyone used this belt linisher, or does it look any good? (hope i can get this link to work:))

page 16, woodworking catalogue, item number L-612 Sorry i dont know how to link directly to that page.

i have been drooling over this for a while and think it would be a good addition to my half finished KMG clone. thanks in advance for all opinions and advice. hope everyone is happy and well. cheers!

I think that when your kmg clone is done, it will do what the belt on that could do, so i think that just a dedicated disc sander would be more cost effective.

:thumbup: fer da kmg clone, them 6'' sanders i dont think much of. at least not the one i had.

If you want it to sand the flats on your scales, it would be fine. If you are going to use it to work metal it will have a few problems. It is a woodworking sander, and may run faster than you may want at times. Also it has a dust chute, which will collect the grindings, sawdust, and sparks - usually resulting in a small fire in the housing/guard.

I have two 6X48 grinders, one pretty much like this one,and I use it for squaring up wood blocks after stabilization, but for little else. The other is set for variable speed and open faced (like a wide knife grinder), and I use it occasionally to clean up swords after forging, and to flatten wood and ivory that burns at higher speed.
I think a VS disc grinder would find more use.

I have a small one and it's primary use is to sand scales flat.

Metal does not work well on the fast belt and is very hard to hold in place given that it heats up a lot.

thanks all for the replies. I thought it looked good and would be handy for flattening longer blade bevels and also that wood working linishers ran slower than metal linishers , oh well save me money i suppose. it does make sense to finish my kmg clone and also the disk grinder i have the disks for first once again thanks for the replies:D

A variable speed disc is a most useful machine in the knife shop. It is one I would not want to do without. The 6x48 I have is out in the wood shop collecting dust.

A linisher is a flat surface finishing grinder/sander.The word is more popular in other parts of the world than the USA.It is a combined word for LINear and finISHER.

HA! Revenge! finally a word to confuse and confound everybody else, instead of me for a change:D sorry should have called it a "belt grinder" so everyone knows what the heck i'm talking about.:):):)

I am builting my own disk grinder. But, if I wanted a decent one the cheapest, easiest way and had a KMG type machine. I would take a piece of tool arm stock and weld/ bolt a plate to the end, mount 2 good pillow block bearings to it. Then make a shaft that fit the bearings and have each end machined to fit a disk. The left side as I face the kmg would recieve a pulley before the disk was mounted. Then. I would run a V belt from my machines step pulley to shaft" pulley. If my grinder used step pulleys I would not be able to use that step while using the disk setup. With A variable speed yoou would want a double pulley on the grinders drive shaft, so you could drive the disks.

This is my primary disc grinder. I got it for $350.00 bucks. It has a 20" disc with a 2hp reversable Baldor motor.
