Have you come across some really ugly useful knives?

I have! Boy, are they ugly. In fact, they are so hideous, I developed a liking for them. I can't explain it.

Maybe it's because I couldn't care less how I treated them. Within a short time, I grew accustomed to them.

Now some of these "uglies" are part of my daily arsenal of cutting tools.

An ugly but useful knife is a bit like an ugly dog. It's nothing much to look at but somehow you know it belongs to you and you don't care what others have to say about it.

Sure, Spydercos. Now, of course, I love 'em but I'll be honest, when I first saw them years ago I thought they were ugly as hell. :barf: My wife still does and scorns every time I whip out the Endura during a hike or picnic. She's growing used to it, though, and concedes that it's a good knife. "GOOD!?" I tell her, "This knife is one of the best in ..." :D

Her response?

I was going to also say Spyderco. They make some UGLY knives but they perform like crazy.

I agree with you Golok, the dog analogy is a good one. You don't care how pretty it is, it just feels good to you somehow. Like an old pair of shoes is sometimes more comfortable than new ones that cost a lot more. One of my favorites is an older Case stockman I have. The bone scale is cracked and the blades are all discolored, but I reach for it more than anything else I have.

Spyderco's are like Root Beer and cunnilingus - not immediately appealing, but once you've aquired the taste then you can't get enough ;)

TOPS...coyote ugly, but that certain kind of functionality that gives it a certain kind of beauty.

Like a blind date, "She's got a GREAT personality....!" And it turns out her personality IS so great, you overlook her looks, and go out with her again and again...LOL!

I had a Jot Singh Kalsa for about a year. At first, the hump looked ugly. But as I used it, I found that the placement for the thumb as you opened it with one hand was very ergo and did not cramp the hand.

A female friend commented on ugly it was, until she opened it. She took it from me on the spot.

Say Whaaaaaaaa? Spyderco uglies? Damn guys
talk about opposites. Spyderco always put out some
fine looking ones in my book. The company who gets
my instant uglies vote would be Cold Steel. I always
thought the Voyager line was just butt ugly. cuts
like a SOB though.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! That made my day. I really needed a good laugh. Now I'm strangely thirsty.... For what I'm not sure. :barf:

With ugly knives i guess you cant lay em aside just to admire, so you gotta use them... :D

And I got a dog just like your example, too....

Kershaw Boa, ugly knife but the best cheese slicer I've come across!

Spyderco ugly, they are to me. The Military was the best looking of the bunch and I wanted to give them a try, now I'm hooked!!

I love my Voyagers but you are right. They are ugly. That clip point wants to look so wrong but it cuts so right!

Have ya seen the Rocky Moser California Legal ugly but some how I carry it everywhere. Nice thing about an ugly knife, nobody wants it.
