There have been quite a few threads on lock designs and the springs in the Axis seem to come up quite a bit.

I'm just curious as to how many have had the Omega springs break compared to how many have had no problems.

Just a simple yes/no poll.

Guess this could become tainted because "fanboys" like me could say no even if they have had a failure and "haters" of Benchmade could vote yes even if they've never owned one.

Hopefully the responses are honest.

I've had several Axis lock Benchmades over the last 7 years and have never had a broken spring.

i may be in the minority but yes i have broken 1 knife completely (both springs gave out at about the same time after 14 months of EDC) and one more knife which had one spring break. the knives in question are a BM 530 and 556 minigrip. i guess i have really bad luck.

Very interesting thread but you should have broken down no into 2 groups,

No - but I use it infrequently
No - and I use it frequently

That way we don't take knives into account that are rarely used or just collected.

Yes, both omega springs in 710. Other BM knives with axis lock that I have (551, 806) are ok. All of them are/was freq. used (EDC).

After opening and closing my 3 axis knives over 25k in total, I never had one fail.

nope, i continuously pounded on my old 440c griptilian for a couple years and axis flicked it open/closed everyday

Good point! This is the first poll that I've ever done so I didn't think about that.

Also I don't collect knives so I guess that is the main reason that I didn't think about it.

I have to say it is pretty silly to talk about springs that really aren't under tension breaking when stored so I'd have to say that it is pretty obvious that it is about knives that are used IMO.

I've heard some say that they broke both springs in less than a month .... others have had the same knife go for ten years.

... so I'd say a month is infrequent use.

Thanks for the comment.

Yes, on my 556 mini grip. One of the springs broke, maybe because I was playing with it constantly. The lock still worked with just the one spring, sent it in to benchmade and it came back fully fixed and crazy sharp.

Yes. Two on one knife within just a couple months of carry and use. I sent it in for repair on the first one, then the second one broke within a week and a half or so after that.

My springs are fine, one of the problems with the earlier springs was that the type of steel used was not a rust resistant steel.

People would get the knives dirty, wash 'em to clean 'em up and forget to blow out the Omega spring area or some how displace the moisture around the spring.

Over time the spring would rust some where on the radius of the spring and eventually weaken it till it failed.

Make sure the Omega spring area is dry and lubricated before puttin' yer knife back into service after cleanin'.

Yes. 2 springs on different occasions in a 710.

Made and installed my own replacement after the 2d spring broke.

Yep, my Kulgera had both springs break. One was a few months after the other though.

That makes me wonder. If one breaks, does it put extra stress on the remaining one so as to cause it to break sooner than it would otherwise?

710(sold)
14205(sold)
930(sold)
