i wanna brigna tomahawk with me to afghanistan when i deploy this fall. depending mainly on wether my unit will let me.

i was thinking of taking the american tomahawk VTAC it looks like it would be a great back-up weapon and an eficient portable breaching tool.

any thoughts or comments

I am under the impression that the VTAC is actually issued in many units as an entry tool. Depending on your unit it maybe easy to get one in.

My guess is you'll find the utility to weight ratio isnt high enough to want to carry one if your 1st Shirt or CO allows it anyway. Weight is the killer over there with the altitude, I went over in Dec 06 and I'd come from near sea level, every extra pound you carry WILL be felt, believe me. When I had the choice of something extra to carry I added more ammo.

Whatever one you take. Keep track of it when you return. It will has some meaning to your children and family. I carried my father's knife that went through WW II with him. I lost track of it some years back,,Hmmnnn maybe my daughter lifted it from me.
Razor, be carefull and keep your head down.

thanks for the info my grampa still has the knife he had in korea and the pocket knife that was issued to him by the u.s navy so i can fully apreciate the value that comes along with such things.

to be honest it will be more for morale than anything. but its nice to know its there if you need it.

thanks for the opinions, take care all.

I concur with the statements about the VTAC. I've got one and I definitely believe it'd be good for morale.

Agreed, and it is THE hawk carried by our troops over the past few years now...
It is light enough to not be detrimental, yet light enough to be 'fast' in fighting...

ATC VTAC all the way!!!

Check out the article: May 2009 Knives Illistrated there pick for Top
5 Tactical Tomahawks

ATC VTAC...

It is what my unit use for exactly what you were saying... light breaching and CQB.
Can't go wrong!

The article gives a short review on 5 Tomahawks
Emerson's CQC-t.......RMJ Tactical Shrike
R & D Tactical Tomahawk....SOG's Fusion
and American Tomahawk VTAC
It mentions the weight, dimensions and retail prices, there are photos of each piece....

If that issue is still on the shelf, I should get one...
Barnes & Noble has a HUGE magazine department!!!

I guess that I am in the minority but if I was going for something tactical I would chose the Emerson's CQC-T. But actually, I would go for traditional design like from Fort Turner. You can find testimonials and a couple pics from soldiers on his website. I'm not particularly promoting his but the traditional type in general. Most of the time you would probably be using the hawk in a more utilitarian manner, which the tactical design wouldn't excel at, and I don't think that the tactical designs would be that more effective in a combat role. I think that a traditional hawk would be just as good a weapon. The tactical versions do look scarier, but that could be a disadvantage. From what I've heard a lot of the people in charge in the military don't seem to realize that your at "war" and they limit the carry of large knives, tomahawks, etc. If what you are carrying looks more like a tool than a weapon you might be able to get away with carrying it whereas you might not with the tactical versions.
