So I have a cold steel trail hawk, i kinda like it. I was wondering if there was a site/place where i can find a new handle for it. I don't want a stock factory 19 inch one, I would like something more like 30 inches. I know about vec and his voo-doo magic handles but unfortunately I do not have the cash. Any ideas??? Thanks in advance and I have got to say I love this section of the forum

Go to Home Depot, get yerself a big old hickory replacement handle, fire up your belt sander, and craft your own.

i figure you are saying find a big hammer replacement handle, and i have a belt sander, so that should be what I do when I get around to it I will post some pics

Cold Steel makes a 30" replacement handle for their 90F Hawk and 90WH War Hammer with a item number of H90BA. If you google just H90BA it will pull up a butt load of links. I just paid $7.67 for one.

I got one of those last year bro...it was way too thin. :thumbdn:

I don't know, I'm kind of likin' it. The one I have thins down in the middle to about what the end of a standard hawk haft is, but then it flares out again in the last 7" to be slightly thicker than a standard 19" haft is at the end. Good point, though, that a belt sander and mattock handle would allow for the "perfect" haft.

sorry about our current price limits too, brother.

we would've made a composite slip handle earlier - we did actually, but the idea needs refining to fit the size diffferences that Cold Steel has in its eyes.

it was disappointing to be so close and yet so far.

we've had a couple good ideas so far, just no chance to get back to it yet.

here's the old handle - carbon fiber, just for shits and giggles;

it looked like a black snake.

we'll get back to it in 2009, i reckon, with some improvements.

the carbon fiber actually was my friend's idea, who has a lot of composite experience, as do i, in aircraft composites.

we are best buds and worked together for many years.

i told him it was a bad idea, but encouraged him to go for it after i saw he was hot to do it - it's his carbon. :D

they are really tough, but not as tough as the stuff i use.

we destruction tested about four or five of both materials test handles - they both performed well - the tests were brutal.

carbon fiber is also electrically conductive, which is a big no-no for a combat hawk.

that's why God made Carbon Fiber look like a snake maybe - it'll bite ya.

so hammer and mattock handles, I will go find some with some veritcal grain and start sanding away. Oh and am i going to be able make a slip handle or one like a regular axe and wedge it. Oh so full of questions am I
