it's been a strange, challenging month here at the humble Hawk Project.

the weather has been wet and freezing, and i lack a paint booth, so a lot of stuff went on hold. then the ECO Hawks had a hiccup and were sent as an incomplete order, and i got sicker than a dog for a few weeks with some strange bug that ran all over my respiratory track. one of those "just shoot me" things....

screw it - mercy is for the weak, or at least that's what Mom says....

the short story is;

i am feeling better and starting to turn and burn again.

TOPS Knives came though and got us all our stuff almost immediately, so if you have an ECO on order, or a backordered accessory, and you didn't get the word, it's heading right atchoo, ba-beee.

....and we had plenty of SoCal Sunshine today so i could coat!

do i hear an AMEN-NAH...?!!

here's a couple hawks that have a new Mil-Spec flat enamel coating on them.
02.JPG

super flat.
03.JPG

the coatings are color-matched to the micarta veneer on the Gen 1 Mk V handles underneath.

i could put an Epoxy Vapor Coat on top of them if the Investors want, but i think they are pretty hardcore the way they are.
05.JPG

we can always re-coat them later. the Epoxy Vapor Coat toughens the finish, but it is a little shiney - i usually spray matte acrylic on top, it knocks down the UV.

the brother who ordered this one wanted a tan and metallic motif, so i tried a hammered finish mixed with Coyote Brown. it is gorgeous to me. more importantly, it swings beautifully - i love the new Gen 1 Mk V endo-/exo-skeletal handles - they just feel like they are angry at some buddy - hehehehe...! that's a good sign in a hawk....

i also have been having fun making some Mjolnir Forager Axes.
08.JPG

no, that's not wood on the right - it's a composite finish we call Faux Cherrywood Heirloom, and like the others, it has the micro-pebble SnakeSkin finish that is easy on the bare hand, but has superior gip.

i am also making a short little Mjonir in Multicam - i thought it would be neat to try out as a Skinning Axe and Carpenters Hatchet.

It's begging to be thrown, I am wondering if this was the size of some throwing axes in the past.

any questions that need immediate answers, please contact my Erica;

keep praying for the humble Hawk Project.

more later, as i get back in gear.

thanks for looking, brethren.

that faux cherry wood really does look like the real thing next to the tactical colors. very nice.

OT but have you tried out that TOPS survival saw that i see in the pics?

does that small TOPS axe throw at all? or is it just a small chopper? those ecohawks are pretty cool, working on turning some railroad spikes into survival hawk heads, next time I have access to a torch and some workspace I'll pound them out and send them in for heat treat

yeah, i was actually surprised at how well they worked, brother - i usually have a chisel and folding saw with my standard hawk and long knife, so it fit right in to miniaturizing my kit with the ECO, et al. i tell folks to try the ECO the way it is, but if i also encourage them to mod them - a chisel on the tanto/spike tip is really a nice little addition.

..........

brother PayetteRucker - the Fast Axes do throw quite nicely, which also surprised me, because they are zone-hardened 1095, which i thought might be too brittle, even with the advanced heat treatment - the original Fast Axe has been a big hit with the troops that TOPS sent them to, as throwers.

i like the Fast Axe compared to a general survival knife so far - i really like the Cold Steel SRK and the Fallknivens for example in that niche - the FA2 accentuates the things that i like in a survival knife;

i can baton it through saplings for making shelters, and it is a decent mini froe like the others knives mentioned too, but it has more chop than any of them, and it is a better thrower by far IMHO. i like how the blade is ahead of your knuckles, so that is one less little injury to worry about, and a few other things.

it's not perfect, but i had a chance to get them at a good deal, and they are pretty great as a GP defensive weapon too, so i think they are worth looking at.

you can find out more about the FA2's from Erica, if ya like;

thanks for asking.

............

on another Hawk Project note;

i have been plugging along on the prototype Melee Handle for the Daisy Cutter, and i will try to have some examples up ASAP next week. it feels really nice so far. it's a handle that accentuates combatives over utility, and might be pretty interesting to some folks here. a utilty-centric handle for the Daisy Cutter will come out soon too, God Willing.

i am also going to try to get out some new axe handle and VN handle designs, as we have some really cool Gransfors Bruks axes and a few others that i've wanted to make a specialty composite handle for. - if the Daisy Cutter handle technology is successful, then that is what i will base the others off of. they should really be worth the wait.

we are currently only taking customs orders from the militarty and publc service as little as possible while we get our existing Customs List out of the way as much as is possible. we won't turn away Investors and such, but i want to ge a whole bunch of the new stuff stocked up so we have a shorter turn-aroudn for the Investors, as well as a superior product that matches more needs and wants for different types of heads.

we will have IGH's available from time to time.

i am also thinking about going to visit the Gransfors Bruks factory in the next year.

thanks for your time.

after the past couple weeks that I've been having, yeah, that'll definitely work....my trees are already trembling!

ya want me to put an extra Epoxy Vapor Coat on it, to toughen up the finish?

it already has one underneath the outer coating. there's no functional gain to a second EVC, it just keeps it pretty longer.

the extra coat only takes a couple days, or we can ship right away and just re-finish the hawk if ya want to later.

whatever ya like. that's us.

I'm going to bust your chops a bit here. San Diego freezing?

well, that's definitely true compared to Duluth, brother - LOL -feezing if you are a coating and need sunlight....

(rubbing chops and smiling, figuring i deserved that.)

thanks for the info vec, I'm going to have to try to incorporate some of this stuff into my budget.

thanks for your consideration, brother!

i might be up by you in a few months. - we might have to go out and shake some of these things up.

Saint Erica is having a baby in June, so i might be grounded for a while. :D:thumbup:

If this baby girl is like the last one, she should be ready for white water when she is three weeks old... i figure that and the Bike Rally in Sturgis oughtta be perfect... i can't take a short trip up north - too much to do and too many good folks and family to see... ya miss one and these Mormons never forget it....

Vec, Do you consider the Norse Hawk strong enough for throwing? Where the blade meats the eye seems to be pretty skimpy on material. Thanks.

yeah, it's very resilient because of the zone-tempered 1055 that they use.

i've seen and sold a lot of them, but i never saw one break.

i like the way they ring when ya flick the edges.

the Norse is a great fighting design - i like the similarities it has with the Fast Axe 2 that we carry, especially for stuff that a machete is usually better at than an axe-type chopper.

i've got a couple Norses in the Dungeon that i've been meaning to do some Celtic ropework (i think that's what it's called anyways) designs on ...now ya got me thinkin'....

Vec, it's all up to you, since you're the pro. It was a rough couple of weeks, and that may have been accidentally portrayed to Erica via email, so please offer up my apologies to her. Here's why: My son was born on 3/16/10 @ 01:38 am! Things are getting a little calmer (as much as they can be) and so I understand that you have work left to do, so no big deal. Thanks for the pics, it is a good looking piece!

i went ahead and Epoxy Vapor Coated it for ya, brother, and put a UV coat over that to knock down the shine, so it should look great for a long time.

i sat there in my flu-stupor'd brain and thought - by the time he replies, i could've done it! - and all the epoxy stars were lined up that night... she looks really nice, and tough too.

i'll wrap it up with the protective paracord and we'll get it to you right away.

congrats on your son BTW! - some buddy's been kissing! LOL. no aplogies necessary, you were perfectly reasonable (of course, this ius coming from a guy who throws hawks at bugs ionside the house - hehehe!)

- we are due in June for The Kate! we are very excited as she was an unexpected blessing.

your bud,

vec
