The guiolltine was designed by a French doctor with the same last name... at the time, I think there was political change (they were trying to kick out Louis XIV), and he sought change in the execution method because beheadment methods were inhumane. There are plenty of times where the executioner does not strike at the correct place with swords and axes, resulting in prolonged agony in the victim's part.
The doctor designed the machinery so that it would guarantee a swift beheadment, hence a quick and less painful death.
I'm not sure if this information is correct, but that's what I remembered.
