On a recent camping trip, my wetterlings large hunting axes head came loose. How should I tighten it back up?

Mine did the same thing. Tightened it up with another steel wedge. Do you have any photos of the problem?

The axe originally came with one circle type wedge, which was insufficient. Is your version the same?

Yeah run to your nearest hardware/farm supply stores and pickup another wedge. I have a couple old axes with 3-4 wedges them.

depending on the finish of the wood, and how loose, maybe a little linseed oil in the end grain might swell it. my dad had several axes that loosened over winter and tightened in the summer.

Pin the head by drilling a 1/8" hold side to side, tap in a 1/8" nail, cut it flush and peen it. The head will never again wiggle loose.

my Shawnee throwing hawk's haft gets wiggled loose alot, it gets thrown a crap ton. I find a good oiling allows the wood to swell and secure the head again-your haft may just be dried out. Try a linseed, mineral or tung oil. I personally like Birchwood Casey's gunstock wax or tru oil, both are superb products that will keep your haft/handle from drying out and the head coming loose.

thanks for all the help guys, Ill start by oiling the wood around the head to try and help it.

Hi Ed,

Just to clarify - drill through the head and handle, then peen the cut nail?

Thanks,

Jeff
