Can some one tell me what the weight of a std. size
hawk head is, also the weight of a mouse hawk head.
Gib

I can't answer your question perfectly, but here's a little rough info that might help. My Two Hawks Competition model weighs about 15.8 oz, of which the head weight is probably around 10-12 oz. The Longhunter, which has a hammer poll, weighs around 19.3 oz. total, of which the head is probably about 13-15 oz. The total weights are from a digital postal scale but the head weights are just my estimates.

I believe that the head on my H & B Forge Shawnee is probably close to a pound, maybe a bit over. The small Squaw model felt like about 10 oz. head weight, but that's just my estimate.

Sorry I don't have any precise figures.

Thanks for the reply, I have started to try to build
some and wanted to get it right at the start, it
seems like I can't leave them alone. Gib

It just occurred to me that I have spare Two Hawks and H & B handles in a closet at home. I'll try to remember to bring them to work and weigh them on the postal scale. I could subtract those weights from the totals and get the actual head weights. I didn't think of that earlier because when I weighed the hawks a few months ago I was concerned with total carrying weight rather than head weight.

I finally found the handles and did the weighing on the office's digital postal scale. At least when you're weighing hawks, nobody tries to cut in front of you for the postage machine!

The H & B Shawnee weighed 25.6 oz and the replacement shaft was 10.2 oz, for a net head weight of 15.4 oz. The Two Hawks Longhunter was 19.6 oz (up 0.3 oz from my previous weighing because I wrapped the grip area with paracord). The replacement shaft was 6.2 oz. You can't get the exact head weight by subtracting the shaft from the total because the hawk has Two Hawks' rawhide reinforcing and my paracord wrapping. I deducted 2 oz for those and used an adjusted weight of 17.6 oz, less 6.2 oz for the shaft----for an approximate net of 11.4 oz. Note that the Longhunter has a hammer poll, so the Competition thrower head would probably be just under 10 oz.

Man do I have to get a scale and start wondering what the head weight is on all my Hawks,Or just make them and hope they are correct.Since I forge each one a little different this could get ugly ;)
Guess If I start out with the same size piece of steel to begin with the weights should end up close..
I was having so much fun making these and not worrying about anything but the cutting edge length,This couold take some of the fun out of the Hawks:D

Bruce,

I think the best idea is to go with the old Nike motto: "Just do it!"

After seeing and hearing about your work I'm convinced that any hawk you make will, ipso facto, be correct.

I don't think it will take the fun out of it, I just
did not want to build a 8oz hawk when I needed a 16
or 20oz head. There seems to be a lot of varition
all the way from 1/2 lb to 2 1/2 lb so I am just
going to have fun. Thanks again Gib

Me to..I think I will just make them and as I learn more I will get to know what i am looking for and the sizes I need to make..
I am also having fun decorating out the handles now....
