ok, so i just ordered my new computer, a falcon northwest:D , and now im finally gonna get a digital camera. the only thing is i know NOTHING about them, ive never even actually seen one before, besides in like the best buy and curcuit city ads.

the only thing i DO know about them is the higher the resolution the better its gonna look, but thats kind of given aint it!:p
an since most of you guys have em i figured you could tell me more about em and which ones are worth the money.
im lookin to spend $400 to $500 on one, can i get a decent one for this price?

most of the pictures im lookin to take are gonna be up close stuff, like knives and whatnot, but i also want to be able to take pics when i go 4wheelin and stuff, so im kinda lookin for an all around performer.

thanks

Hey, when i bought my digital camera a few months ago i did some serious searching and researching...i had a tighter budget then you do, but i decided to get the Toshiba PDR-M70...they go for about 500 dollars, but i got a refurbished one online for 300 dollars...i read every online review i could. i absolutely love this camera, and getting it refurbished is a great idea, they come having gone though a 30 point inspection and have all original problems completely fixed. It is a 3.3 megapixel camera with incredible photo quality...the camera is not super tiny, but its a good size to hold onto...the features are great, you can go completely manual and completely auto, it has a backlit display, a huge LCD on the back, and a very nice zoom...you can also shoot movies! it has a microphone and a speaker and many other really cool features...i would put this one high on your list of considerations...check out this review site, it is absolutely the best site out there:

by the way, ill email you some knife photos and some outdoor photos i have taken with this camera if you want, just tell me and it will be so.

go to www.dealtime.com , there you can compare prices of websites carrying any specific camera...they list the prices of refurbished cameras as well as new cameras. this is how i found out about the site i got my camera from. if you look here:

http://www.dealtime.com/CompareDeals/DoItem/1,2642,7185-3-1-1-1039-1,00.html?GSID={C65F5AB5-325E-4ED9-98A3-B9BF035DA703}

you will see that you can now get my camera for only 289! thats an incredible deal...did you get the pictures i sent you?

man that pic of that lizard thing is amazing, btw what the hell is that mini submarine thingy??

im definetaly gonna check out that website, thanks for the help.

that mini submarine was at an aquarium i went to in Mystic, connecticut a few weeks ago..and that "lizard thing" is my pet veiled chameleon...sorry i couldn't post these pics for everyone to see...hope this helps though...be sure to do a lot of reading in that camera review site i gave you in my first post

I don't know a great deal about digital cameras but I do know that the megapixel size determines the maximum (quality) print size you can achieve. I think I read that 2 megapixels will allow you a 5x7 and you'll need 4-5 for a decent 8x10 or bigger. Keep in mind that I'm a photographer so my ultra anal standards on prints may differ from other people.

Hope this helps a little...

Actually, I think it depends on what you're printing it with. I take mine in to get processed--so if you're having it professionally printed or printing on a dye sublimation printer, my 2.1 megapixel (Canon S110) does a great job with 8x10 (people cannot tell the difference between a 35mm and my digital prints), but 3 megapix and up will get you 11X13 and up. Don't like to print on a regular deskjet.

Hey Payback

Check out this site for good info.

I bought a Sony DSC P-71, which is the upper level of the entry level cameras. Figured I can use that to learn about digital photography without spending 1k or so and finding out I don't like it.

Based on the reviews on dpreviews.com and several camera shop recommendations. It was a little over $300.00 in Nov 2001. Sems like it's actually gone up since then. It's only 2.1 MP but is very small and takes good pix.

It also comes with a Lion battery and charger which is a big plus in my opinion. Real Nikor optics as well. It's also really simple to operate. The only negative for me is slow shot to shot times.

I know there are better ones out there, but I have a Sony MVC-FD83 that takes good pics. I needed one that was easy to work, and it does great for the money.
