Help me choose one of three Cannitlers!

Ok. My next knife is going to be a Canal Street Cannitler with that lovely d2 steel. It will take its place as my new EDC and will get alot of wood carving time to boot!

I wanted one a lil fancier than their standard fare and emailed Canal Street about who they currently had special productions with. So here are the 3 canidates listed from cheapest to most expensive.

5th Anniversary Cannitler with rosewood and special 5th shield.

Cannitler with White Buffalo Mica Pearl. Some kinda fancy resin. I don't know anything about it, but it sure looks pretty. I wonder if it has a decent 'grip' factor. I tend to shy away from most synthetic handles...except on my Vics.

And finally, Cannitler with External Rams Horn.

So, any advice? I've never had a knife with any of these materials. Some similar, but most of my slipjoints are jigged bone of one color or another. As far as price goes, they are not too far apart. (There is a pearl Cannitler, but it is massively more expensive than these, so it's out.) Aside from handle material, nothing jumps out at me. Too bad one doesn't have long pulls or matchstrikers that would make it easy to choose!

**EDIT: Late entry. I found an old Marbles Cannitler in atlante pearl with d2 steel, made by Queen. So I guess it should be in the running too!

I'm not normally a MOP kinda guy in any way, shape, or form, but I could change my ways for that Marbles. It sure is a good looking little knife.

Also, if I might suggest it...

I have been eyeing this one since around Christmas-time.

Cannitler with External Rams Horn
Lots of texture and pattern
Just my personal choice

Don't like a second shield on the wood
The Mica is too busy

The Cannitler is an excellent knife

The 2 Cannitlers I've had are the rams horn & mastodon. I actually preferred the rams horn one because it was definitely grippy & I would think it would be the grippiest of your choices.

As an aside, I ended up keeping the one in mastodon, but part of that was because it's also the '07 BFC knfe.

However, if for some reason you don't really want/like the ram's horn, my 2nd choice would be the one with wood handles.

I'd like to suggest you buy any BUT the Canal Street with the White Buffalo Mica Pearl.
Only because I was planning to buy that exact model for a friend of mine around the first week of February, for his birthday and to be the first pocket knife he passes on to his first grandson when the time is right.
Seriously, A. G. Russell says they're making 200 of that model, so don't let me influence you.
I like 'em all!

I have a weakness for colorful celluloid so my vote would be for the Buffalo Mica...I have been eyeballing a couple with that scale material in the AG Russell catalog. Grip wise the Ram's Horn would provide the most texture for grip but that Buffalo Mica is just so good looking.

Thanks for the input! I think I've narrowed it down to 2. The MoP, is pretty, but I have the feeling it would crack first time I dropped my knife. Not so good for EDC. The rosewood would be nicer if it didn't have the second shield.

So, that leaves the Mica Pearl and the Ram's horn. Hmm. The Mica is pretty well impervious to damage or change of any kind. Horn isn't as tough, but still pretty strong and very grippy.

As I understand it, D2 will patina over time (as will the brass CS shield). I'm trying to picture how that will look on each knife in a few years. Is horn pretty stable? Or will it undergo some drastic changes in its life? This knife in particular I want to have 'heirloom' quality.

I think the mica pearl would be the most durable if that's the only criteria. However, the ram's horn, to me only, just seems more natural. I'm not sure the ram's horn will change colors or anything over time, but I believe it can warp, but I would think that'd be an issue if the knife was abused, not lovingly cared for.

That rams horn is great looking. It probably looks better in real life. If it were me, hands down I would get that. I am not a resin guy.

Ok. After hearing all this great input and starring at the photos side by side--I think I'm leaning towards Ram's Horn. It would be my first knife in Horn so I hope I like it! And if I something should happen to the Horn...

Well, with all the great talent I see on this forum, I'm guessing it wouldn't be too hard (or too expensive) to find someone to rehandle the knife for me.

So, if anyone has any great support for the Mica Pearl, now's the time to tell me.:D

Either way, I need to go check to see if I can order one tomorrow or if I have to wait till payday!

+1 on the ram horn. It looks the best out of all 4. I wouldn't worry too much about something happening to the scales. I've heard of people having problems with buffalo horn, but can't recall anything regarding ram horn. I think it's more stable.

I dont think you could go wrong with any of them, but I like the Rams horn.

Once again, I have to agree with everything neeman says. +1

I'd jump all over that ram's horn.

Ok. I put my order in for the ram's horn. It shipped on Monday, so it should be here this week! (hopefully). I'll have to take lots of pictures when it arrives. I hope its perfect, I have really high expectations for it!
