Hi. My last pocket knife's handles fell off (cheap Ace Hardware knife), and im going to buy a new GOOD knife. I am considering a SOG trident folder or flash II, kershaw blackout, or a benchmade. I dont know much about benchmades. Also mabee considering a spyderco. Any suggestions on which knife would be the best, or any others that might be better. Thank you.

Since you mentioned some mid range production knives (with the exception of Benchmade which has excellent stuff in a range of prices), have you looked at the Camillus Heat ? For $55 delivered, you get an EXTREMELY sharp edge, great lock up, and very good steel. [OK, AUS8 is not ATS 34/S30V/154CM or VG10, but still very good steel.] My Heat is the most bang for the buck I've ever spent on a knife. I love mine for EDU (everyday use), and it is so light it won't tear up your pants. I would avoid the black blade as the coating isn't durable, but the AUS8 isn't gonna rust on you if you wipe it down after cutting up lunch. Check out the many reviews of the Heat. I also like my CRKT Lightfoot M1, another super value (also under $55 delivered). If you want to spend $25 more, check out Benchmade's Griptillian series. Good Luck !

There are so many options...benchmade and spyderco are good, economical choices. Go to their websites and browse, you'll get lots of ideas. (My favorite for around 40.00 is the Spyderco Calypso Jr.)

Then you may know more about what you might like.

You can't beat usefulness/price of Victorinox Swiss Army Knives (SAKs) for many applications either.

What do you plan to use this knife for? Heavy use? Food use? Carpet? Cardboard? Will it be near saltwater?

The best advice I can give you is to think about specifically what you might want, consider lots of options and ask lots of questions. Do your research before you buy. Handle the different knives in a store if you can. Manufacturer's websites have lots of good information and anything else can certainly be found here!!

And welcome :)

Stumpy11,

Welcome to BladeForums :D

I would really suggest a Spyderco. Can't beat it for the price (in my opinion). Great steel, and a great knife. You'll get a knife that's a good tool and also a piece of art.

I just bought a Spyderco Scorpius. I thought the handle would feel weird but it really fits awesome. It has just a 3" blade and is perfect for my Every Day Carry (EDC).

Benchmade is good too. I have a Benchmade 880BT and I like it. If I were to recommend a BM I'd say do a 707 or maybe a Mini-Griptillian (awesome knife for price).

I have not owned anything else so I can't say anything about the others. Spyderco would be my first choice, and then Benchmade. :)

I wish you well and know you'll make a good decision.

Cheers,

Hello and WELCOME!

I am a Spyderco fan and I'd say go with Spyderco!

I'd go with any of the following, all prices are street prices not MSRP:

Small (under 3" blade) - FRN Jester (~$20), or a SS Dragonfly (~$40)

Medium (~3" blade) - Calypso Jr. (~$40), Delica (~$40), Paramilitary (~$100)

Large (3"+ blade) - Endura (~$45), Manix (~$110)

There are more options than those, any you can't go wrong with any of the Spyderco line up. Just look around on the Spyderco.com website for something you like, then check out on the web for the better prices. Newgraham.com has great prices and is reliable.

I'm sure everone is tired of hearing me say this but...

I think the best you can get is either the Benchmade 551 Griptilian or the Spyderco Military.

Good luck,
Allen.

I plan to use this knife for everyday carry. Will cut ropes, ect. A little food use (not like cooking, but camping), and not carpet. Only time it will be by salt water will be 5 days out of the year when I will go deep sea fishing.

Also
I was wondering if the black coating on some of the knives (like benchmade 551 griptillian) will wear off?

I am also considering Camillus Heat.

Thanks for all the help.

Welcome to the forum...

I'd have to say that your best bets are Benchmade or Spyderco. BM's Grip or mini-Grip (depending on the blade size you want) are both excellent. I carry a Ritter mini-RSK for my EDC and it's been a great choice so far. It's an upgraded version of the 556. I also have a Spyderco Delica that I carry when I want something high quality and thin.

I avoid black or coated blades personally. Besides not liking the look, I also have run into problems with the coating wearing off. I just keep mine clean, sharp, and conditioned with Militec.

I would also avoid autos or AOs. Depending on where you go you can run into some serious heat from cops, etc.

That said, bnith BM and Spyderco have many other models that might fit your needs better than the ones mentioned.

They are all good choices. You just have to decide what design/features you like best. Me personally, I love benchmade because of the axis lock. I'll probably never buy another folder without one. Some people could care less. It all depends on personal taste.

Before buying any other knive you really want to take a long look at this: Doug Ritter RSK Mk1 (including all the side-bars and links) and then check the claims made about this knife buy searching bladeforums.com and rec.knives. That's what I did and there is no doubt in my mind whatsoever that this is an awesome knife for a very, very reasonble price. It comes with a lifetime warranty and you can contact Doug Ritter directly with any questions: he is a very nice guy who really cares about this knife.

How about a Camillus Heat? It has a folded over liner lock and a "Robo assisted" blade. It's basically a more affordable version of the Camillus Dominator. I'd say it's worth checking out!
