I spotted this knife in Blade magazine quite a while ago, and I just thought it was such a cool design that I put it on my PhotoPoint ‘Dream Knife’ album.

I hope you can tell from the photo but that’s a dual liner lock, the maker is Murray Sterling, of Mt. Airy, NC.

I did a search on BAKCA, and all the Forums I could think of here, and came up with nothing on him.
I sent an E-mail to Murray today and he was very quick to respond, and when I asked could he do that knife for me in stag, he said he could and would be glad to send me a pic of one in stag if I liked? Of course I said.

My question is does anyone here know Murray or his work? I’ve never seen him at any of the NY shows. The reason I’m asking is that I’m thinking of ordering that knife early next year and I’d like to get some feedback

TIA

PhilL,
I have known Murray for a couple of years now (at least thru shows and the NCCKG). He makes a heck of a nice folder. He is a real nice person too. If I am not mistaken, Murray owns and runs a machine shop.

I have held and studied the very folder that is in your pic. It is SWEET. The fit, finish, and function are all high quality. The double liner lock works very well and is quite ingenious IMHO.

I am familar with Murray's work. It is clean, well priced and does mainly semi-traditional folders using lock back, liner, slip-joint locking mechanisms. His knives have started showing up in the magazines lately. You can also see several in Knives series over the last several years. I have been most impressed with his upscale folders in Devin Thomas damascus and ivory. He is a very nice man to deal with. The last show that I visited with Murray was the New Orleans Guild show.

Good Holidays,

Larry

Barry & Larry, thanks for responding, I had a feeling from looking at Murray's website and by how quickly he responded that I was dealing with a real professional, but it's still good to get feedback from guys like you that know a lot more about knives than I do.

Murray is from my neck o' the woods (NC). In fact, I saw him last weekend at a knife show in town. As usual, he had some great gent's folders. I got to play with his new automatic, which actually uses a lock back locking mechanism! Hold the knife is your hand and depress the lock bar on the handle spine, and the blade pops open. It looks like a regular lock back manual opening folder. Very neat!

That is neat. Hmm. I thought it might be difficult to find additional knives that I _have_ to have. It's not. :-)

Mike, I'm sorry to say I haven't as yet, it's still on my list. :(

He mentioned he had one in stag just sitting there waiting for a good home. :-)
