Hello, my name is andrea and my husband, jed, is trying to find classes in blacksmithing. We live in Atlanta, Georgia and I was wondering if anyone knew a school that is close. We used to live in Arkansas and we knew Ron Newton and Jed trained under him a few times. His ultimate goal is to become a mastersmith and we really need to find a bladesmithing school if there is one around. Thank you so much! -andrea

Hi Andrea,
Try a search for the American Bladesmith Society. There's a
list of MasterSmiths, with Ph #s, and addresses...

Hi Andrea,
I don't know of a school in the area that teaches blacksmithing. We do have an active custom knifemakers guild in Georgia that can be found at the following link:

We usually have a meeting once a quarter hosted at member shops. The next one will be at our shop at Twin Blades in Statesboro. Watch the Guild site for more information (date not set yet, Jan/Feb time frame). We usually have about 40 people at a meeting with demonstrations and food and allot of knife talk. If you are interested in knives it is allot of fun. We will probably have a few bladesmiths come in a day early for some forging, and some will stay late for the same thing. We would be glad to have you and Jed come to the next meeting. It would be an easy way to get to know some Georgia knife makers that might offer what you are looking for in the way of classes and we always have a good time.
There are quite a few makers in the group that are very good bladesmiths, some are members of the ABS (I paid my money, only two more years until I can test) and some aren't. From what I have seen all are willing to help and I believe that some offer classes at their shop. Several are near the Atlanta area. Hope this helps, and hope you and Jed will come to the next Georgia Guild meeting.

Ocmulgee blacksmith guild would be a good place to start.Iwas a member for about 15 years or so.I just moved to Utah but still have my dues paid.Look on the web page for more information. Robert Washburn

Moved to Utah??? Robert it gets COLD out there. Robert was one of the ABS members in GA that offered classes, and is good at what he does. The drive might be a little long now. Robert, hope you keep making knives. I always like to watch out for knives from the Georgia makers in the books. I guess that Jed will have to fill your spot at the table at our GCKG meeting in February.
