I'm sorry to have to ask the same question you guys get on a regular basis, but hopefully, you can help me make a decision on a new custom, since everyone likes a different thing.

I am looking for a new custom, and I am partial to a 'gents' style folder. My favorite so far has been the William Henry T10 Lancet, for size, blade geometry, aesthetics, and workmanship. I also own a Koji Hara airstep (see below), but don't carry it, since it is too nice to use, and if anything goes wrong, it would be too much hassle to send it back to Japan for refinishing.

It needs to be something relatively small (Lancet- or WeeT- sized), have smooth handles/scales (don't care for jigged bone), relatively slim, have a liner lock, thumbstud, and must be comfortable and balanced, so that I can 'fondle' it in a meeting, kind of like you would with 'worry beads'. The budget is roughly under $700. My problem is that if I spend more than $500 on a knife, I'm afraid to use it, but I also like something unique, so I recognize that I'll need to cough up the bucks. I don't mind spending the money if this is a 'knife for a lifetime', or a 'pearl of great price'.

That said, I am looking for recommendations of makers and/or knives that you feel have the highest quality workmanship at this time, in the category I need. Some suggested names that have been made by friends are Terzuola and Centofante. Is there a benefit to buying something from a Master Smith? Are there any 'up and coming', undervalued makers out there?

Thanks in advance!

I second the recommendation of A.T. Barr. He's a really nice guy who does great work for reasonable prices. I am eagerly anticipating receiving my order from him.

Wow! 3 for 3. What is it about Barr's work that you feel makes it a superior value? How would you rank it next to Bob Terzuola's work on the Wee-Tee?

I certainly can't find fault with the concensus so far. A.T. makes some great knives.

Someone else you might want to check out is Andrew McLurkin.

I really think that he makes some very special gents folders. Don't know enough about Bob Terzuola's knives to give you a comparison, but I like the looks of Andrew's knives better. Just my opinion, for what it is worth.

Thanks for the feedback, guys. One of the Terzuolas in question is this one here, listed at $495:

I looked at AT's work, and it sure is tempting... I kinda like that pearl handled one, but my budget was $700 tops, preferably in the $500 range, so I'm sure that rules out McLurkin's work also.

Keep those ideas coming!!! In the meantime, I'm going to post a question specific to feedback on Bob T's work in the General forum, to get broader feedback.

RK

I want to second the recomendation of Keith Coleman. I sent you a private email with a picture of a knife he did for me last year. He does great work for much lower prices than some of the others mentioned here.

www.colemanmade.com :)

Check out Keith's Phantom model - really great price for a damascus 3" bladed folder. There will be a waiting list though, which is 6 mths when I last emailed him. Hopefully I will see mine early next year...

Rovert, do not rule out either A.T. or Andrew. They both make very nice knives in the $500.00 range. You would be doing yourself a great disservice by not looking into their work.

Keith Coleman does make great knives and most of them are under $500.00.

RK there is another one, a modified Wee-T located here;

http://www.arizonacustomknives.com/terzuola-robert.htm

at the bottom of the page, with nice Mammoth Ivory scales, and they say it's a one of type, I was going to get it but things popped up and had to recind my order. But Bob's work is top notch and I have one of the BM450 folders he designed for Benchmade that is a take off of the Wee-T knives and that is a great little knife.

Good luck in your search, if you happen to get the one from Arizona Custom Knives, tell Karen or Jay I recommended them for me would you?

Here is a close up of that knife that Jay sent me, notice the scales how they come up a bit more on this knife, covers the stop pin...

Allow me to cast another vote for A.T. Barr. I have one of his small folders (2 1/2" blade), that my wife bought for me at the SECKS a couple of weeks ago. The fit and finish are excellent. What also stands out is how comfortable the knife is in my hand.

FWIW, I made a point of checking out that Wee-T you're considering while I was at the SECKS, since I had seen it on Les' website. Very nice knife, but it didn't scream "buy me" when I picked it up, so I put it back down.

Thanks for the feedback, everyone. Can we get some suggestions other than AT Barr? :D Other than the makers already mentioned, who else is out there? Again, the parameters are:

$400 - $700
Gent's folder
Thumbstud
Liner Lock (for single-handed operation)
If bolstered, prefer curved style - not straight edge
Drop point, under ~3"
Overall length ~6"

What about:
Arno Bernard?
Frank Centofante?
Mel Pardue?
Kansei Matsumi?

I personally feel that Bob Terzuola is one of
the finest folder makers around.I examined
a Wee-Tee at the Blade Show West and was most
impressed.I own a MK-1 of Bob's by which I
compare other folders.Fit,finish and function
are flawless.Have not had the pleasure to
examine A.T.Barrs work but lots of folks seem
to like it fine.Half the fun is the research
and the chase.Good luck.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback. I have received some great advice, and have a few makers 'on my radar' for future purchases. I finally decided on the WeeTee from Les Robertson, and appreciate all the great advice that's been extended here.

Best regards, to all. I'm sure you'll hear back from me soon enough, when I go for the next. :D
